The pnHTML hack will not work with pnRendered modules. I did this because I was unhappy with the news module which still uses pnHTML. :(
Regardless of how the output is generated, the logic for any pager remains the same. How many pages (determined by dividing total items by items per page) and what page are you on (or, put another way, what is the starting item number on a given page).
It should be easy to take the above and modify it to a new plugin or modify the existing plugin which sucks. Replacing the "<<" and ">>" with images or alternate text would also be quite easy to do; however, If I were going to do it, I'd get the language first and pull those images, and/or text, from the language files because, in many cases, the images and/or text will be language specific.
