PHP 5.1 RC1 (at RC 6 now), Anyone have tried it??  Bottom

  • Hi

Just would like to know IF someone have been able to test PN .76 or PN .761 with PHP 5.1 RC1 or 5.1 Snapshot???

To my best understanding PHP 5.1 is very close to release and would like to know IF PostNuke .761 behaves well along with it.

    Regards!

  • Hi:

Well, I tried PHP 5.1 RC 6 very early this morning. My sites were not able to work properly with it. A Xanthia based-site behaves a little better. One site using AutoTheme refused to work. Nothing displayed... I even deleted all files at _compile dir.

So, basically providing feedback re PHP 5.1. It looks very fast compared to 5.0 but dunno whwre are the compatibility issues. Maybe is a matter of tweak.

If other could report their experiencies, it could be better to detect issues.

  • I've just updated my test environment to the latest windows snapshot (5.1.0RC5-dev) and so far .761 and the current .8x cvs both seem fine in this environment. This is, by no means, exhaustive testing and I can't comment on 3rd party modules but the core distro seems fine.

  • Hi Mark:

Maybe, I could test later with ExtraLite theme. Also, reading a little more about 5.1 could help. I had problems with PHP 5.0.5. My configuration is more complicated as I use AutoTheme 1.75 and IONCUBE Loader. Dunno if these could be the causes of the instability.

Besides PHP 5.0.4, my setup is Linux RH, Apache 2.0.55, MySQl 4.14. I was optimistic, altough I might try 5.1 snapshot instead of RC6.

  • Since extralite is the defaut theme this is exactly what I tested. I also tried a couple of xanthia themes too. I didn't try AutoTheme since i'm only interested in the results of the core distro - i'll leave testing of 3rd party modules to thier authors.

  • Hi:

Tried PHP 5.1 RC7-dev too, hmmm I think the problem is a Apache 2 (SAPI) - PHP 5.1 issue. The PostNuke pages loads fine, but the server apprears top crash after browsing for a while. Then after 5-9 refresh trials the page loads again. The Xanthia site seems to work almost perfect -- but have the same crash problem.

Unless is CONFIG problem with Virtual Hosts. I am back to 5.0.4.

Will continue testing IF Apache 2 related commits are made to PHP 5.1 CVS in the next days. I hope a fix is commited as I think 5.1 is very close to release.

  • Hello,

I've tried PHP 5.1.0 release (available since November 24th) on my development server.

Since then, my .761 PN web site does not work anymore because of an Apache crash ! I looked at possible configuration problem dealing with mysql. Hoverver, phpMyAdmin works fine on my server.

I found a workaround to this problem. I changed my Apache config and tuned my server API from "module" to "CGI/FastCGI" (i.e. PHP is loaded as CGI and no more as an Apache module). Since then, my PN web site works again.

I suspect I have memory failures when the Apache server loads PHP as a module. PN pages are pretty heavy in memory I guess.

Anyone experienced the same kind of trouble with Apache while loading a heavy-duty PN site home page ?

    Mark,

Just out of curiosity - what do you use for your "test environment".

  • Adam,

My main dev machine is windows based since there's one vital piece of software only runs on windows without which i'd never get half as much done (Football Manager 2006 from sigames.com - I code while playing....). Seriously though i've both Apache and IIS installed along with various PHP versions which I manually change between whenever needed.

I also have access to a copy of vmware so I can test something in virutally any x86 environment (given sufficient time and inclination).

  • ah thanks,

So you don't use any of the packaged lamp apps - like Xammp or easyphp? I use xampp at the moment, but it is starting to feel "crusty" so I am thinking to change my DE and thus researching the options.

  • Adam,

No I don't use any of the pre-built packages. My real job is as a systems manager for a university so i'm more than comfortable dealing with server environments (mainly netware in my job). Installing PHP, apache & mysql and configuring them as I need I don't find a problem.

  • Mark,

Thats cool - I'm afraid I am more on the line of "jack of all trades, master of none" LOL so I will have to content myself with the pre-built packages.

  • NETWARE!

    Oh how I envy you..
We migrated over to the dark side 2 years ago off of NetWare.

I was actually a Novell Support Sysop for a number of years as well.

Man how I miss working with NetWare... :(

  • I've got one SUSE linux server, by my right leg as we speak. There I run myself CVS, and the latest versions of a variety of other things. I also run PHP, MySQL and Apache on Windows XP on the laptop for when I'm on the move (or in the middle of a field) and want to do some coding. Finally, I have one other windows PC on the network running versions of PHP5, MySQL and Apache - I plan to use this for stess testing PostNuke .8, which the linux server really isn't up to. (You may have noticed the database indexes I added recently to CVS. With my own unscientific approach to page render times etc, I saw a marked improvement). Both the linux and Windows servers are running PHP5 and MySQL4 - though I will run upgrades through on each one every now and again.

All are manually installed, of course ;)

I couldn't ever contemplate moving to Linux from Windows for my normal desktop activities. I find Linux higher maintenance than Windows XP, and while Linux crashes less often, I get lots of other non-critical problems. The lack of some vital features that are easy to install really puts me off. Then again, I'm using an old version of Suse, and don't do a great deal of research into Linux in general, so I'm probably mis informed.

  • Hi:

I migrated from OS/2 in 1999-2000 to LINUX. OS/2 introduced me to Apache and PHP. I liked it very much. IMO it is a shame IBM was so incompetent marketing it.

Anyway, I am a LINUX user since 2000. I am very very happy with it. This for my websites. I like to use LAMP and like to use latest versions. Right now 5.1, Apache 2.1.10, MySQL 4.1.x, and RHEL. LINUX have been also a 'learning' experience. I am somehow proud that I configure PHP, apache to fit my needs and vision. BTW, PostNuke .761 seems to be behaving fine within this new environment.

The next component that I plan to upgrade is MySQL to v5. But there is not hurry to do it now.
