    Hi,

I am upgrading from version version 0.7.2.3-Phoenix. - will it work to upgrade from such an old version?

Our server admin has shut down web access to our site - they say they won't re-enable it until we upgrade the site. The problem is that the upgrade process seems to require some web access, so I need to determine if I can skip those steps. Specificaly:

    2) Do I need to do the step listed below: the whole site has been active and running for years - doesn't that imply that I am probably okay on this step? It seems like I have seen in admin that a great deal was initialized and active.

Step instructions: Make sure that all the modules listed below are initialized and in an active state. This step is vital when upgrading to .760 since a number of essential modules (Admin, Blocks and Modules) are upgraded in this release. AddStory (NS-AddStory) Admin (or NS-Admin) Admin_Messages (or NS-Admin_Messages) Blocks Censor Groups (or NS-Groups) Header_Footer legal LostPassword (or NS-LostPassword) Mailer
Multisites (or NS-Multisites) NewUser (or NS-NewUser) Permissions pnRender Search Settings (or NS-Settings) Submit_News User (or NS-User) Xanthia Your_Account (or NS-Your_Account)

    3) It says to switch the theme to Extra Lite. What happens if I keep the theme set to SeaBreeze? I am upgrading from version 0.7.2.3-Phoenix.

    4) I have a backup of config.php as I backed up all the files.

    5) Does this step apply to me? I have 0.7.2.3-Phoenix.

Step instructions: If your uprgrading from a earlier release containing the Xanthia and pnRender modules ensure that all cache and compile directories in pnTemp are emptied.[/b]

I tried once a long time ago to upgrade a live site, turned out to be a complete mess. Now I always download a backup and upgrade it on my localhost. Once I've got it working correctly I upload the lot to the webspace put the database in and away it goes.

Seems like that would be an option for you, you do have a back up don't you.

Wouldn't I need linux with PHP enabled to do it localy? I only have windows and it doesn't run PHP. How does one backup the database?

You can get a server that will work on your wondows box here:
    htp://www.easyphp.org

If your web host has cpanel you can use that to get a complete backup. Or you will have to use phpMyAdmin to back up the DB. If you can't/don't know how to do it ask you haster for help and see if they will provide you with a backup.

Thanks for the tip! What I finaly did was to port the entire site files and database over to another website I have that doesn't get much use. I used that website to get the system working again and then I worked on the upgrade from there.
