Delete my acc on this website  Bottom

  • Hi.

I don't know whether I'm posting in the right place or not, but I'd like to delete my account in this site. How should I proceed?

  • you can't. but if you never come back, then what's the problem? If you're worried about email harvesting or something, then change your email in your acct.

    hope it wasn't something I said icon_wink
  • :)
  • I remember when I was arguing with pnManagement I asked for my account to be deleted as well as all my posts, but was told that this was not possible.. thankfully we (pnManagement and I) have settled our differences, but I do wonder if my posts are copyrighted by me and should be removed at my request or not...

Looking at the wording in the footer of this page it seems that this should be the case, but maybe not practical in practice?

Anyway it might be a gotcha for some sites with many members commenting, etc - with a mass exodus or estrangement this could wipe a big info site out... maybe some kind of differing policy is required for forums, etc - something like:

You agree that all the comments you post here are to be licenesed under the creative commens license or GPL or something along them lines...?

  • What is sure is that if the request to delete all posts from a user cannot be granted, it means that the forum has acquired some right on these posts, which are not the sole property of their poster.
This also means that the forum is liable for the posts.
  • I'm sure that the reason that they all say that is because if the forum/BB/wiki assumed the copyright of the posters, they would become liable for those statements. Nobody wants to get sued because some jerk slanders somebody.

Personally, I think if you post something on a public forum, such as this, your statement just became public domain. Probably not legally true - but I think in practicality, it is.

Not on this forum, but I've seen users pull up all their posts and then edit the content from them....leaving just a single word or dot in their place.

Your post are in fact copyrighted by you. The kicker is that when you sign up for a forum (or site for that matter) if you read the TOS, you'll find that virtually every single one has a statement saying that they may use your words in any way they deem fit. So yes, you own the copyright to the posts, but in most cases, by signing up with the site/forum you grant the owners a "...worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive right and license (including any moral rights or other necessary rights.) to use, display, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, distribute, perform, promote, archive, translate, and to create derivative works and compilations, in whole or in part." I didn't make this up out of thin air...this comes directly from the TOS in a .750 install (from the legal module)...

But...then again, the legal module is not activated on this site either...at this time anyway... I logged out and tried to sign up a new account...which presents the TOS and privacy links...both of which are bogus at the moment...

With that statement, they are saying "...yes, our posters own the words that they type..." which translates to, "...if you want to sue someone for what they said on our forum, you can't hold PN liable..."

Now, keeping in mind that the content is copyrighted by the author, also keep in mind that PN (et al) reserves the right to use that content as they see fit, whether the author wants them to or not...provided that the TOS was installed AND active at the time of registration (whether you actually read it or not.)

The only thing they (users) can do is to delete their posts (or edit them down)... they have no rights to ask for mgmt. to remove their posts or content.

The TOS does just this...check out #7...
