The short urls solution for .8x isn't yet in cvs as i'm still playing with Martin's original code. A demo can be seen at my test site.

nice, hope this won't be considered hijackin but if one implements a new short urls system that looks different let say one had onesite.com/article1000.html and now has a onesite.com/war_iraq.html... will that make a difference traffic? i.e. for S.E. crawlers will those be like new pages to index?

_IF_ there is a version of this for 0.760 RC3 I guess it shouldn't be that hard to have one for 0.761, but I guess msandersen is busy in other things or just can't make this available for now.

    Too bad :(

    Let's have patience ;)

As far as I know, msandersen's implementation has support for compatibility with old ShortURLS, so, your old links will still work.

I am not sure which it will see, but from what I have read of SEO, you want the second one because it is more descriptive.

You should be careful not to get penalised for duplicate content if you make the switch from one variant to the other.

Depending on how many articles you have, a nice list of 301 redirects in your .htaccess file would do it. It'd be a pain by hand but I think a script could do it VERY easily.

And yes, the new short urls are MUCH better for SEO because the title is included in the URL and the URL plays a factor in relevance, therefore boosting search rankings.

I CANNNTT wait for the short urls to be stable and working, it will jack my traffic up a decent amount I think.

If there's anything I can do please tell, my PHP skills are def limited though :( Willing to start learning if pointed in the right direction though.

    Peace
    John

I believe since the thread was last posted in (2005) that now ShortURLs are included with both Xanthia and AutoTheme. So you basically just turn them on then make any modifications required for irregularities.

What is the best way to avoid this penalty?

use a correct 301 redirection header during transition, use robots.txt to block potential double content.

Could you post a link to a document that explains how to do it?
