So now what?!...  Bottom

  • Ok...So I have just downloaded the PostNuke .zip folder and uncompressed it on my local drive...Now what?...I am using windows XP and I usually edit HTML pages in Dreamweaver and ftp is something I understand and use. But I think I may have 'jumped into the deep end' with this software...

Can someone also confirm that if I do use PostNuke, I would be able to have a members area on a website and a message board akin to this one?

Also, when I understand this technology all a little more, I do intent to use some software called 'AutoTheme 1.7' ( located at http://spidean.mckenzies.net/index.php ). I do not know if I just need to download the 'AutoTheme 1.7' software, or if I also need to install PostNuke and run the two together. Do the two work together or can I just use the 'AutoTheme 1.7' software on its own?

I want to get authoring imediately, so any advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks in anticipation
  • Read the Fine Manual first off. It's far from Comprehensive, but the manual.txt that is in the docs folder will give you a start on how to install it.

  • AutoTheme is a module for PostNuke, do check and see if the theme you are wanting to use is available in a Xanthia Version however, you may not need to install a 3rd Party Module, as Xanthia can do the bulk of what AutoTheme can, and can be made to do most of what it can't do out of the box (Personally, some of AT's selling points over X are irrelevant as they, IMHO, should be handled by PostNuke or a Stand alone module).

Well one of these irrelevancies stopped my developement using the Xanthia theme enigne, and will continue to stop me using it until I know the issue is resolved...

Quote: Why is this so hard to do with Xanthia and yet so easy with AutoTheme?

I like the potential of Xanthia, but to me it is not finished, not polished. For a new user I would recommend AutoTheme - there is a lite version for free - AT-Lite which will is just as good as 1.7 IMHO. It is a third party module, but this is irrelevant as it does not effect anything in a bad way!

  • Other than, even with RCs being published for the purpose of making sure one's module will work when 760 comes out, it doesn't work with 760 yet. If there is still something he needs that AT provides taht can't be done with X, then fine, but I see no reason to add on a module if you don't need it.

Do you mean AT doesn't work with pn760? If not, I am sure it will in the end - Shawn would be very quick to make it work... any it would be crazy to lose 1000's of themes at the stroke of a release.

In regards to installing modules if you don't need to, I fully agree - I was just responding to your comments about AT's selling points, and also I firmly believe that AT is a lot easier to use than Xanthia at the moment, thus making it better for new users (IMHO).

I love many of the features of Xanthia, but some parts of it irritate me, especially block control. I don't understand why X should have this method when the devs could just modify the blocks module to cater to infinite block positions - xanthia is the core after all! Just do this and it will save everyone a headache. It would also negate the need to overwrite core files with the AutoTheme module as well...

  • To be honest, Xanthia doesn't fully work with any of the versions of Postnuke. As Lobos pointed out, the block placement doesn't seem to work. Even with the instructions from phpNut, I still can't get additional blocks to show ...

And I agree to Lobos, its a shame that Xanthia isn't more intuitive.

Awesome idea! I'm all for that since I also struggle with blocks in Xanthia...
  • warrick,

Unless something has changed in the code again, blocks do work.
    I corrected this before.
And I never heard anything else from you when I sent last email.
I think I even offered to do a IM chat or even call to "walk" you thru using this and showing you how it works.

I will work on the user interface sometime soon, had many things keep me away from coding on PostNuke for a while.
And as I have said before, and with little reply contact me for help with this, but also give ideas on how to make it more user friendly.

As for adding this to the core blocks module, Xanthia was an addon at one time, and this allowed people to extend PostNuke without hacking the core. So others may change the way it works now.
  • I appreciate the directions you sent Larry. I followed them to the letter and it still didn't work. I just gave up in frustration. I didn't contact you just because I didn't want to mess with it anymore.

You may be right that area blocks work in someway or other, but I've yet to find anyone that can make them work. If the theme developers can't figure it out, then I submit that it is far from intuitive.
