  • Not so familiar with ASP... but it _seems_ like an MS-proprietary PHP...that's harder than PHP? I have an ASP buddy, but he can't tell me exactly what it is without starting at the history of computers...so...I'd be happy to hear some thoughts...
  • Everything I've read about ASP makes it come across much like PHP. They have similar capabilities, and can be used for similar applications. ASP probably has better capacity with things like customized web controls. However, I think it's a lot like many other programming language debates - certain languages are very similar, being roughly equivalent for many tasks and split being a little better at others. For a lot of people, the scales are tipped because PHP is a free, open source language. It doesn't hurt that it's included with many (probably most) unix and linux versions.

ASP .NET is a whole other thing, using not ASP language but VB script, C#, or other languages for it's code. The Micorosoft tools convert the product into a Common Runtime Language (CLR) which is then converted to a javascript-like language for client side scripting (mostly interactive UI) with a server side component for the rest of the program. It's pretty good for web applications that need lots of interactivity. Think Visual C++ for the web- it's a little excessive for most people.

It should be noted (in case you missed it) that this is partially fact and the rest is my opinions - I hold a degree in Computer Science, but I am by no means an expert in programming/scripting languages.

  • Thanks for your 2 cents... :)
  • I just hope it's lucid. The 4th of July has left me a bit ragged.

  • Thanks!

Wanna switch ages? I've got a prime 32 with your name on it! ;) Judging by your seemingly endless wealth of knowledge, I'd say you must be about half my age....or twice it. ;)
  • Not quite half, but.. ;)

I pride myself on learning quickly, and on discarding useless knowledge to make room for the important stuff! ;)
