Web Links only goes two categories deep :(
 Top

  • Installed PN site. Decided to add content but I need to work with PDFs and nobody replies to my post asking about PDF handling...

So I now decided to build up the links section but found the online manual stating "There is one draw-back currently. Categories can only go two levels deep. This is being worked on for a future release."

I need to go 4/5 deep. Is there a third party module to handle web links or do others have better ideas for adding links. Thanks
  • I'd use Pagesetter, www.elfisk.dk - might also work for your PDF content too, but I'm no expert...

  • so it is easy to build up web links with that? fairly deep, and users can vote on the links, sort them etc?
  • Pagesetter has its own categories system. It supports hooks, so you should be able to use ratings, and you can sort the links through a URL parameter.

  • I'm almost at the point of giving up. I do not know how to use hooks etc.

I wanted to get started on a first CMS site. I choose PN. Half the items in Admin would not work, and I had to edit code to get PN Admin functions to work (see my post about "HTTPS"). Next I went to work with content but nobody can suggest how to work with PDFs or explain Pagesetter/ContentExpress/PagEd and how they fit together and in relation to PN. Next I go to add web links and it only supports 2 category levels which is not enough. So I had a quick trawl of the web looking for something better than PN, found nothing, but I never checked out Mambo, will do that now.
  • You don't need to know how to use hooks ;) Simply check the box that says 'enable ratings for this module' and you're away...

Pagesetter is a fairly complicated, but very powerful module - I see no reason why it can't do everything you need.

  • I'm a PN newbie, so I need to keep things simple until I am on my feet.

I looked at Mambo and non of their sites is anything like the site I wish to create, whereas a few PN sites are. So I have given up on Mambo again.

Which means I need to keep up the fight to get my PN site off the ground.

I guess a solution to my problems would be to accept the two category deep system for now even though in my case will be a bit lame, and hope that with 0.76 deeper levels become possible?

As regards PDF format, I think the best bet is to do what this PN site http://www.irarichardsmith.com has done which is to type some some info about the PDF in a section like news then provide a link to it via the downloads module.

And then one day when I am on my feet I will figure out Pagesetter/ContentExpress/PagEd ! Lets see.
  • I've just used the web links with 0.750. It does provide more than 2 categories after all!!! I think what the manual refers to is that only 2 are shown onscreen until you click the 2nd one then more are shown!
  • well, that guide is a little out of date.

Can I recommend the new pnGuide? http://docs.postnuke.com/index.php?module=Static_Docs&func=view&f=pnguide/index.html

  • You can find a (very) short intro to Pagesetter that describes what makes it different from PagEd and ContentExpress here: http://www.elfisk.dk/index.php?module=Pagesetter&func=viewpub&tid=10&pid=1&meid=19
