Xanthia or AutoTheme?  Bottom

  • Just putting plans together, had decided on theme, what I what out the website etc. Never used a CMS before...

Now the problem appears deciding AT or XA? On the AT site I read

    Quote

AutoTheme is an HTML Theme System for the PostNuke and PHP-Nuke CMS. The current theme system usually requires you to be somewhat familiar with PHP and the PostNuke or PHP-Nuke architecture. If you are not very familiar with PHP and/or PostNuke or PHP-Nuke, AutoTheme removes this complexity.
well if that is true then XA is not for me, as I know no

    Quote

PHP and I am unfamiliar with the PN architecture...

AT would be OK but the licensing model does not fit my situation - I am building an information site so that would be cheap but I may add products later (more money) and may advertise a service even later (now $99.95 for that license).

I'm happy to pick up a bit of PHP etc but I do not want bogged down for ever and a day just to get some colour on a page.

    Thanks in advance.

Oh and I should say I do not wish to start a XA/AT debate - I want to know the heart of my question - can a newbie to CMS with no PHP knowlege get up and running with Xanthia? (I have a degree in Comp. Scie. Etc).
  • I disagree with the quote regarding the complexity of Xanthia. If you have found a theme (and are not developing your own) then you won't be exposed to that. If you have an installation, you can view several Xanthia themes and their supposed complexity - all the themes that ship with .750 and higher are Xanthia themes (except ExtraLite).

On the other hand, if you have decided on a theme, then it really doesn't matter what you want, you need to use the system that supports the theme you have selected.
  • the xanthia tutorial linked in my signature should help you get your bearings as well.. it's a first draft, but it's just a basic introduction to creating a theme using Xanthia.
  • Actually, The Ad copy on the AutoTheme's site needs to be updated, he was refering to the older theme system which did require some PHP knowledge.
