Mambo has been getting a lot of publicity and getting major recognition from the open source community: http://www.cmswire.com/cms/open-source-cms/mambo-open-source-web-CMS-winning-awards-000552.php
Do we even compete for these awards? If not, why not? I've used Mambo and its great, but why not postnuke?

Mambo sure has a lot of momentum right now. I personally think it is so successful because it is very noob freindly and the admin interface actually has some logic to it, unlike alot of modular CMS's out there. I think they are a long way from a great CMS, but they are doing alot of the user oriented things right. -

Holy crap! Mambo sure is changing quickly, they now have a newsletter, which is very nice, and are offering commercial support through miro. They must be getting an influx of money and assistance with the new miro partnership!

They are newbie friendly in some ways but not in others, like apparently there are around 6 phpbb2 forum module projects going, which one should a newbie use? Do you need to go research each one or pick one at random? As far as the basic mambo itself, I agree its easy to setup and use. -

In a lot of ways I think it is sheer marketing and a cute name and logo. I think mambo would rate somewhere in the middle of the pack as a pure CMS. It still lacks alot of features that are already standard in other systems, even postnuke. And in the end the templating system, or lack of is a huge drawback for professional use. Mambo always looks like mambo no matter what theme you throw on it.
The funny thing is they are always touting its speed, but when they get all the crap put in there from their roadmap then well see? Until then its apples and oranges.
Happy 420! -

Mambo has a beautiful templating system. Its the second best I've even seen.
Yes it's very easy to use, but as far as I know you don't have control of alot of areas of the presentation? -

It may not have all the pnRender functions, but I'd say Mambo has about 75 percent of the AT module's functionality. Its somewhat less intuitive than AT, but its much easier to understand and use than XTE. -

I converted a mambo template a while back - was fairly easy, but there was alot of PHP dotted around...

Well I have had an extensive look into this CMS and can truthfully say that the design of the admin interface totally blew me away, BUT this all that blew me away. Looking at the code base I found a great dissapointment in the fact that there is in no way any separation between logic and design and I pity anyone trying to manipulate the design to look like anything other than, well a Mambo site. Basically in my opinion the code is a long way behind postnuke, but the developers should take a good look at the admin interface - especially the way you can upload zip files to install modules - no need to go into ftp which is nice.
And the awards? Those handing them out obviously have a sweet tooth for eye candy and not one clue about good coding practice... sad really...

Something I noticed about mambo was their use of XML to contain info about the various extensions/templates. The system then used this information to install the item. IMO the XML file is better than pnversion and xaninfo files we have now
