Core file versioning  Bottom

  • Have you checked out pncommerce, the newest edition available at pncommerce.com. I was extremely impressed to find that it has a utility that checks the version number of the files that you have installed with a database of the newest files and tells you if a newer one is available. This is a great concept and something I have been trying to push for a long time. Would be even neater if the person could select to upgrade that file then, or upgrade the whole distro. Of course there should be some type of backup utility within that area. Anyway, just an idea.
  • That is a cool idea. I do wonder about security and just the overall change of a site being crashed intentionally or accidentally with an auto-installation feature.
  • Showing the file version is a prerequisite of a (still planned and not even started) auto_update feature for pncommerce or even PostNuke.

There are some deeper thoughts necessary about version dependencies, partial upgrades and backups but I do not have the time right now for this.

At least the version display can be implemented in the core, together with SHA1 or MD5 hashes of the files. Wait and see... (but not in .760).

  • Warrick, i agree there, thats why i mentioned the backup feature. The backup feature should also have some type of verification process after the backup that it worked. Nothing worse than thinking you have backed somethign up to find it either incomplete or corrupt. This also might be a way for PN to be distributed in a small package with only the core modules (system modules) implemented and then the admin can have the option of downloading straight into PN the other modules. Actually, would be better to give the user the option right at install. Standard, Full, or custom install. I had a lot of more ideas for this a couple years ago that i had documented. i will see if i can find them.
  • Sounds like the Gentoo Portage system :)
