What do you think about how we post images inside of the built in modules of postnuke?
I think it can be improved.
On 3 sites I’ve changed the default way to post theme images to use full URL links instead of the traditional images/themes/<imagename>
On these sites I’m using “gallery†to upload and manage photos. I’ve made a hidden album that users can’t browse but they can view all the images. I upload the images there and then give the image full URL to the now modified themes module. I stick all kinds of photos in there, for stories I can even use the auto generated thumbnails.
http://www.kerhin.org is a good example of the thumbnail trick.
Here is the bottom line / reason I’m posting.
I would like to know if there are any reasons for not integrating software like gallery into the core of the software. Then updating modules to work around it with the full photo URL’s? When I say the core, I mean making that module a part of the standard distrobution of the software.
The only negatives I see so far are:
1. There would be a learning curve / change for old sites to be upgraded.
Thanks all who work on the project,
BK</imagename>

One other place this could be very nice is in the avitar section of post nuke, look at this site as an example... looked like 500 gif's in that list, I don't care about any of them, I'd like the option to plop in my own image URL :). -

Is there ANY support on core PN for uploading ANYTHING. As far as I know, there isn't Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm currently using gallery for photos - it's great. I'm also using Content Express so I can add images to content pages. And UpDownload so I can have files to download, from my site not just a link somewhere else.
I've read that any upload feature is a security risk. I don't know why it's a security risk, and surely this sort of feature is very very useful for a CMS to have as core. So there must be a way to make it secure. Perhaps that's not a PN issue, and maybe more to do with PHP, MySQL, or even Apache. I'm not into cracking security, so I don't know what the issue is or how serious it is. But I *nned* upload, and I personally think it should be core to a CMS. -

The aim of PostNuke is to have a 'slimmed down' core. .8 will ship with no modules, other than those required by the system to run. As a result there are no plans to include a gallery module, or upload ability into PostNuke.
It would be very difficult to include one gallery over another - there are plenty of good gallery modules out there, choosing one over another would not be positive for the development of the other option.
Upload support is no built into PostNuke. Among other things it is a security risk, but you are of course free to use any third party module you want to achieve the functionality

Hmmm I don't drink coffee... maybe I should give it a try? Does it help with the attention span? I find that I can code for around an hour, but then my attention drifts...

Thanks to all who posted. I understand the desires of those who say postnuke should be a base or platform which modules are integrated into but at the same time I feel AGlossop's comments about *NEEDING* upload. I think one of the best things about postnuke is it's module support, BUT if we're going to say that everything that should be done w/ postnuke should be done w/ a module then perhaps accessibility, testing and distribution of modules needs a big update for postnuke. I hope I'm not stepping on any feet w/ regards to that comment. If I am I apologize.
I'm going to try out a few of the modules suggested here and post results.
I'll look a little more at the module availability, support and information available on the postnuke site. I think a modules system like the Linux Kernel would be VERY nice. The Postnuke download package would be HUGE (and should be a BitTorrent type distribution) then in the setup web gui (similar to the kernel) you can choose from modules you'd like. Only those modules would be included into the final production site being run. A setup directory could contain all the setup stuff so later if you wanted to edit things you could untar that setup dir again and add more modules if you want. That way we can still have competition between modules BUT we can also help newbees keep from pulling their hair out by giving them a basic easy way to install needed modules that we KNOW work.
Going a little further, perhaps even a base module built into PN allowing people to get certified modules and install them easily (like red carpet ??).
Thanks again,
BK -

Looked in to the modules issue. I posted a seperate topic for it. Find it at the link below:
http://forums.postnu…rder=asc&highlight=
I think the Gallery problem could be solved and keep both set of commenters happy w/ the suggested changes. Gallery wouldn't be part of postnuke, but it would be distributed with it so that it could EASILY be added w/ little to no work by a newbee :).
Thanks to all again,
BK
