Now accepting feature requests!  Bottom

  • I'm almost done with my version of a PostNuke dictionary mod and will incorporate any new features I can...

The mod isn't complete yet...but it's very close! If there's something you want to see in it, let me know here, via PM or email to john AT alarconcepts DOT com.

The is an in-house database-based dictionary (your database), so there's no outside site dependencies. Completely installed through PostNuke admin (no SQL by hand). Lightning fast search results!

    Tell me what you want!
  • All the features from Rebecca's pnEncyclopedia module.

I know that sounds flippant, but I'm actually serious. pnEncyclopedia is what I use, so if you want me to change to your module, then you better be able to do whatever my current module does. wink
  • :) My goal isn't to make anyone want to change or switch...my goal is to make people happy with a dedicated dictionary module. I've seen posts that wanted a dictionary module. It was a fairly easy task and good practice is all.
  • I want it to clean my apartment ;)

Seriously, if you tell us what is there now, so we can get an idea of what it does as is, it may make it easier to make suggestions

Cool... not really necessary as we already have a dedicated dictionary module with pnEncyclopedia. Why waste time re-inventing the wheel?

Unless there's something that your module does that pnEncyclopedia doesn't do?
  • CRS...this thread isn't for telling me why you think I've wasted my time. I appreciate your input, but this discussion is for feature requests.
  • LOL!

Right this second it has the following...
    - 175,000k+ words defined and ready for searching
    - Search by 'exact match', 'starts with', 'ends with', 'contains' via drop-down
    - Admin definable pagination (number of pages and items per page)
    - 28 char. max search input (ie, antidisestablishmentarianism)
    - Prominent search box on every user page
    - Text differentiations in table titles (ie. 1 match, 2 matches)
    - Ultra lightweight GUI and super-fast results
    - Only chars allowed in input: a-z, A-Z, dash, space & apostrophe
    - "Bad" input chars. stripped, with suggestion of possible correct spelling re-populated into search box.
    - Permissions
    - pnAPI
    - Full install via pnAdmin (24Mb of SQL, split up to avoid script time-out)
    - Completely local install, no off-site dependency

    Random Word sideblock
    - Admin specified number of words.
    - 1 definition per word displayed
    - Word is hyperlinked to alternate definitions
    - Word-link has hover text for accessibility purposes
    - Ability to show a "learn more" link, linked to alternate definitions, hover text also
    - Definition length text-limiting (for long definitions)

    To be added...
    - Admin submit/edit/delete
    - User submit
    - Admin approval of user submissions
    - Possibly a popup interface to avoid full-page takeover (admins choice)

That's all I can think of at the moment...
  • I've added many of the "To be added" items to the "done" list above... More suggestions are appreciated.
  • Hi,

this sounds quite cool ... did you implement this using pnRender?

What about an autolink feature where preiodically all content is cross-referenced to each other?

    Greetings

    Thanks...no I didn't use pnRender...it's pnHTML ('cause that's all I know)...and I'm still learning...

    There's also no autolinks feature...

I'm a bit disappointed in myself...having broke it good while implementing the admin edit functions...

Maybe someone will have a clue...I got the tid/words/definitions to pull into the edit form, and then I edited an entry... The entry was changed, but then the pager somehow went buggy (disappeared for that letter...even though there's still many words in the database that match)...and if I search a new word, the pager does come up and displays properly...but the links are all the same...

    Argh...back to the drawing board...
