CastleKart  Bottom

  • Having no clue if this is appropriate or not, I defer to you Michael, or whomever, to toss this into the recycle bin if that’s where it belongs. Please note I was not asked to write this. I have no incentive other than the fact that I think it might benefit many PostNuke loyalists who want to open a shop.

Since a few weeks before forever people have been asking for a PostNuke to OSCommerce bridge. To the best of my knowledge, that never happened and may not. Now I don’t really care.

Currently, two people, Sam Castillo (Neo, former PostNuke lead developer) and Alexander Graef (MagicX of PortalZine) who have forgotten more about PostNuke than most of us will ever know, have teamed up to fork OSCommerce. Their fork, which they’ve named CastleKart, is starting from a very much cleaned up version of its predecessor with a PN-like templating system. It is to OSCommerce what PostNuke is to PHPNuke and can be found at www.scriptconnector.org.

Because it is still early in forking from OSC, like Zen is, I believe most, if not all OSC and ZenCart modules (contributions) can be easily modified to work with it. I’ve modified a few already and have no doubt that, if I can do it, anyone can. That means a host of payment gateways, accounting, templates, and hacks will be there for you from day one. (These will evolve in diverging direction, of course.)

CasleKart is not yet ready for production use, a fact Sam and Alex have made very clear, but it's in it's second beta release and will be ready for production use soon. Remember, PostNuke is still in Beta as well.

I feel CastleKart will be the best and most likely candidate for bridging PostNuke with a sophisticated ecommerce deployment. Even their company name, Script Connector Corporation, alludes to that being where they are headed.

I wish Sam and Alex well and hope this community gets behind their effort with CastleKart. Remember, the more interest we can send their way the sooner we’ll be using CastleKart and the better the chance of seeing that elusive bridge.

  • Sounds cool. What sort of templating engine does it use? If they really want to kick it into overdrive, they should consider talking to Shawn about including the free AutoTheme module. It has been very popular for OScommerce.
  • ..it uses Smarty.. the template engine that pretty much every contending web app is using with these days, for good reasons.. Sam was actually two hands in to what "was" to be PostNuke's theme engine a few years ago.. also based on Smarty and subsequently "lost" in a HD crash..
  • Hey IR!

You are the person who told me about CastleKart. After fooling around with OSC for a while, you convinced me to take a look at ZenCart and CastleKart. They're both pretty nifty. :D

  • CastleKart is going to make OSC obsolete.. well, that's what I would have said about the PN fork from phpNuke icon_lol .. evidence that a community can carry a "product" I think ;) .. they're laying the groundwork for an amazing application (templates, modules, ADOdb..).. I'm ready to put it to use, but it's a little premature yet..

    back to my cheesecake..
  • It is premature for use. I recently discovered a problem adding sales tax. That kind of stuff is going to happen but these are the types of problems that can, and will, be fixed. While premature for use now, people planning an ecommerce site would do well to keep an eye on CastleKart.

    Cheesecake?

  • I agree.. I'm not doing anything with shops until it stabalizes some.. it's worth waiting in my opinion.. better that than get stuck with some ridiculously HUBAR'd (hacked up beyond all recognition) OSC install.. my last experience with OSC was the final straw.. I felt dirty using it.. hahahaha!

  • ROFL. I love it too. Aren't those things called Peeps or something like that?
  • ..ahhh ;) ..a metaphorical homage of sorts.. pink, sugar coated, marshmallow bunnies wrapped in plastic... Peeps indeed :)

..I've got a sudden hankerin' for jelly beans now. icon_lol
