I wish to create an image as a background to multiple cells in the table in theme including left blocks, centre and right blocks. Is this possible?

Depending on the theme, it is most likely in the CSS file.

yes, this is possible? What theme are you using? i will try to help. You will most likely edit the theme.php or one of the style.css included in that theme.
