cmsMerchant - My feedback  Bottom

  • Hi,

A while back I was looking for a subscription manager for a PN site for a Client. After a lot of reading in these forums I plumped for cmsMerchant. There was a couple of postings from someone who was moaning about it, but generally the comments seemed positive.

I opted for the full version with all of the Payment Plugins as my Client wanted the flexibility of multiple Credit Card, PayPal & Cheque payments.

I had a little trouble getting it to work in the first instance but this was soon sorted out by their tech Support (thanks Serge) and it turned out to be my fault anyway as I'd left a trailing space on the PayPal email address in the configuration.

The guys at cmsMerchant have been very helpful and even made a few changes to my the code to allow me to use the UK version of "Cheque" instead of the American "Check" in the language variables.

I've since bought another licence for my Running Club where we use it to handle our annual Membership renewals and Membership applications.

I have no relation to cmsMerchant, I just thought as I'd had a good experience I'd let others know. :D

Here's the sites I've used it on:
    thebite.org - (Nutr…onists Information)

  • Ditto.
  • I have heard mixed reviews, but I'm currently shopping for a similar solution. What I need is something that will allow me to define multiple subscription plans and link each one to a different PN group so we can use PN permissions to setup the site. Do you know if that is possible? I emailed them and asked that but the response was not entirely clear for me.

My client also has some concerns about the closed source. I have no problem with it from a licensing perspective, but they are worried that we won't be able to tweak the store system if needed in the future. I bought X-Cart Gold for another client site recently and I love the fact that I can change the source code if needed. Has the encrypted source been a problem for you guys?
  • Many thanks for the positive feedback Simon and wtaylor :D

leason, with cmsMerchant you can define as many plans as you like for as many customer groups that you wish to have. That's not a problem.

Restricting access to a Postnuke module is down to the Postnuke Permissions module, if the module you want to restrict access to can have permissions applied to it then cmsMerchant will enforce it and handle transactions, memberships etc.

Permissions can be tricky, often a case of playing around with them and reading up on the FAQ's regarding the topic, I think they can still be found somewhere on Postnuke.com. We give do provide some information about setting permissions for cmsMerchant like:

    Configure PostNuke/MD-Pro Permissions
Apply Permissions to the new Groups you created for use with cmsMerchant via PostNuke/MD-Pro Permissions Module using the following example:

    Group: Customers
    Component: .*
    Instance: .*
    Permissions Level: Comment

Shift this Group's permissions above the Group called 'Users'. But this is basic.

In our case I don't really believe that closed source is an issue for the following reasons:

    (1) Extensive customization can be made to the look and feel of a site using cmsMerchant with AutoTheme, cmsMerchant is fully AT compatiable.

    (2) Language can be customized.

    (3) The wording of all parts that a visitor sees upon visiting a site running cmsMerchant can be customized by editing a single file called global.php which is in the cmsMerchant language folder. Example if you wanted Subscription Plans to be called 'Sales Plans' or 'Products' to be called 'Services' or whatever you could do it by editing that file.

    Hopefully that helps clarify.

  • There is also the free postnuke cart: http://www.pncommerce.com
  • Warrick,

I was under the impression that pnCommerce did not support subscriptions? Am I wrong about that?

  • with pncommerce you would have to manually adminster the subscription,

move the users to the new group, take them out when they cancel or subscription expires etc... from what i understand, if you configure cmsmerch properly it will do it for you.

i bought cmsmerchant, have installed it on my site and still messing with the settings. i wanted to offer a special subscription rate for the first 10 sign ups but i can't find a way to do it automatically yet. i will just have to count them manually or offer the discount rate until a certain date then go into cmsmerchant and disable that subscription plan.

some modules just don't support restricting permissions by group very well. for example, if pnflashgames had sub categories i could restrict by PN group, subscriber only: action games
  • Word on the street is that there is a subscription module almost completed. Fully API compliant and pnrendered. The developer hasn't made an announcement as yet but I've seen it and it looks really good. Shouldn't be very long before its ready for release.

  • Yea, no kidding.....
  • Well here is a list of Postnuke Commerce Modules

There are actually quite a few modules out there. pngroups, postpalmultimembership, DreamAccount, CMSMerchant, and for those that have a old copy of pnMerchant, that still works as well.

If you guys know of others post them up.
  • Does anybody know if CMSMerchant is no longer able to be purchased?
  • Just to let you guys know: I'm in the finishing stages of writing a professional (and commercial) webshop based on PN 0.8. If supports all the things you would expect from a proper webstore, such as inventory levels, inventory checking, product variations, etc.

If anybody is interested they should mail me at rgasch]at[gmail.com
