IBM gives open source 500 patents  Bottom

  • I am not sure you spotted this news.

'the New York Times is reporting that IBM is making 500 patents available for free to anyone working on open source projects. Awesome! Why are they doing this? The Times explains:

I.B.M. appears to be siding with a growing number of academics and industry analysts who regard open-source software projects as early evidence of the wide collaboration and innovation made possible by the Internet, providing opportunities for economies, companies and individuals who can exploit the new model.'

Future seems even more open source.

  • Not suprising,

IBM has been clear that it is interested in protecting the validity of OS's outside Microsoft so that it can continue to produce large scale mainframes.
