Is there a user's personal webpage module???  Bottom

  • I am sorry to ask such a question in here. But I can not find this module or any module similar to this. I believe postnuke did come out with a kind of module like this one.

This is a module that ables users to have a webpage for themselves. Such like the user is able to change the webpage to fit according to his/her desire, possibly using HTML scripts. The user can basically make a webpage with personal information about him/her.

Is there such a module??? IF there is, please help me find one.

    Thank you very much!
  • If you just want to allow them to post personal information, try the address book module.

On the other hand, if you want more, PostNuke has an extremely powerful permissions system that you can use to give your users sufficient privledges to do almost anything. Combined with templating, I would think there are many ways to do this with minor modification to any number of existing modules.

I think you need to start by defining how much design control you want to give your users and how much real estate you want to let them have. Are you concerned about bandwidth? How much overhead can you absorb before your website begs for mercy?

Do you want to maintain control of the header? How about the footer? The columns (assuming we're working with a typical layout)? How about your theme, do you want their pages to reflect your theme or not? Does this even need to be integrated with PostNuke?

I'd also consider how much latitude you want to give them (or trust them with). Should they be able to upload images and if so how freely do you want them to be able to do so? Are you going to allow them to run applications and javascript? I wouldn't.

Personally, I'd be careful how much you expose your website to but these are the types of things you need to consider. You've got a fair amount of planning to do before narrowing the possibilities.

  • Slugger,

What free modules are available for all the options you describe?

As to what I am specifically looking for, I think I like to look for something that can enable user to be fully open to doing whatever they can on the user's homepage/user's page. I prefer that I just give them full access to put whatever they want that is sensible and fitting to even young kids. And I can just check up on each user's page each time I get.

Of course, it will be nice to have the ability to disable/able user to upload certain amount of file. I do not like user to start providing the web storage a homing device of troubles.

If you know what kind of free module for this, I really appreciate to get one.

    Thank you!
  • .. there's a file manager module (can't remember the name.. ewfilemanager maybe) .. it's probably perfect for what you want to do.. allows users to have their own folders, they can add/remove/edit folders and files.. a really nice module.
  • Is it EasyWeb File Manager?

I will see tomorrow to take a chance to look at this. I hope this is it. But if it is... I will give the link here.

Let us hope this is it...
  • Though I have no experience or knowledge concerning EW FileManager, IR's recommendation seems more in line with your goal. I was thinking about something less ambitious.

Good luck and, if you can remember, post a followup here so other people can know if you found the module useful or a waste of time.

I can not really work wtih EW Filemanager. What it seems to only do is upload some files into a new folder. There is nothing to personal page making. I like to see a module that enables users to use HTML to build their own personal webpage. Can you or anyone provide me information on that?
  • yexusbeliever,

Hmm, I was originally thinking about pnAddressBook but that's not going to do what you want. At least, not without major modification.

The filemanager might still be useful though since the creation of webpages will require the uploading of files, unless you want them to host their own graphics. Of course, if they upload an HTML or PHP file, they can create their own web pages.

Perhaps you can hack an existing module or find some simple tool/editor which will assist them in creating those pages. Pagesetter might work but there is a learning curve and you'd probably want to create templates for them to use. Maybe someone will have some ideas.

  • I think what yexusbeliever is looking for is a module or method of automatically creating a subdomain for each user (kind of like em411.com) so that upon registration a user is given username.sitename.com and can upload (via a module or designated ftp) to that folder and as such have their own webspace...

there are "webpage-in-a-box" programs out there that allow a monkey to create a fairly simple but nice webpage with no HTML knowlege-maybe one of these could be integrated into PostNuke-that would be downright nifty! How about the Multisites feature...(I don't even know what it is so I may be way off)

I would be interested in hearing the response of the Dev team to this idea-security issues, feasability issues...ya know bounce the idea off the aces...

I'd also be interested in lending a hand in any way I can to seeing something like this come to fruition though I'm no programmer...
  • I too would be interested in something like remmingtonshowdown has suggested. Something like http://www.gnn.tv though not as complex or feature rich.
