Passing variables to plug-ins?

I made a plugin which works great except for one small problem--it doesn't seem to be able to read the variables that are set out on the page. Is there a way to pass a specific variable to a function when you call it from one of the htm files? It seems like such an easy thing, but I can't figure it out, and all the reading I could find on the Smarty site only confused me more. -

Never mind, just found it.
In the htm file, do:Code
<!--[projectadditions projid="$projid"]-->
Then it'll just be a variable in the function. It seems so simple now, but all the documentation for it made my head reel. :)
