i'm looking for a module that will allow users to register for a newsletter (but not necessarily the website) and a module that will allow me to simply add email addresses
what are the best choices for newsletter modules (they don't have to fit the above needs)? what are there pros and cons?
thanks!

I use pnTresMailer with good success.
Users do need to register for the website, but then clicking a Subscribe button automatically subscribes them to the newsletter.
It could use some work, but serves my purposes well. Don't know of any other PN newsletter solutions. -

I use pnTresMailer on a couple of PN sites I run. However, if you are in need of a more professional solution, I posted this thread about a possible commercial alternative. -

As recently announced on this website and elsewhere, pnTresMailer needs help. pnTresMailer hasn't been upgraded for quite some time and there have been issues recently regarding compatibility with .750 and security issues as well. It's a bit rough around the edges but most of us who've used it have modified it for our own use and nobody should expect it to work perfectly out of the box.

If people are making modifications to the module to make it work with newer versions of PN and be a little more secure, why not release those updates for everyone else? -

Those mods, to the extent that they aren't proprietary, have been made available and widely discussed.
A wise man once said, "seek and ye shall find" and so it shall be if you: search these forums for links; go to the home of pnTresMailer and do the same; or use Google.
