Google bot block  Bottom

  • I have silly but potentially fun idea - can a block detect what kind of user is visiting, like a bot? If a block could use a simple method to do this, like the statistics modules does, could it decide to display or not?

My (admittedly silly) idea is a block that only appears when google or some other bot crawls the site. It would display something like a "smile for the googlebot" image, or something like that.

There would be more potentially interesting applications, like displaying something designed to raise google ranking or somesuch. Average users never see it because the block only displays to bots.

    What do you think?

    Thanks,
    Frank
  • Frank,

While technically feasable it's a bad idea generally since search engines can blacklist sites that target content specifically at search engines. The search engine should see what the real person sees. This is why tools like snakeseo aren't such a good idea. See this thread for some more detailed discussion on content specically for search engines and snake seo.
