UpDownload as full on replacement for Downloads module

Has anyone attempted to fully replace the Downloads module with UpDownload? IOW, have the 'standard' search include UpDownload data. And to replace the 'Downloads' links that appear in some themes. I tried to blindly replace the Downloads directory with symlink and hardlink, but it wasn't effective. I wanted to avoid any hand tweaking of the PN code. Changing things administratively would be the proper way. Maybe there's a way to tweak the Theme? I thought so, but never found a way to replace the references to 'Downloads'.
