Postnuke.com: some comments  Bottom

  • As a recent convert to Postnuke from e107 (after having the site basically fall to pieces through several critical bugs that I could not fix- even with help- probably due to my web host more than anything, but that's besides the point) I certainly appreciate the fact Postnuke is free and there is quite the extensive amount of resources for it online. However, I must comment that I've found my experience at postnuke.com a rather negative one. The site looks nice and everything seems to fit together, but I spent probably 50% of my time on it trying to figure out where the heck everything is.

For instance, take the modules, blocks, and themes sections. Are they just news highlighting the recent releases, or are they a database of all of these items? If so, where the heck do I find the list of all available themes? If it's just news, which I suspect, where is the archive of all news entries older than the main page? I'd like to browse back a bit (since I'm brand new to this and obviously not everything I need will have been released in the last couple months). I know Postnuke can DO all this stuff, but it seems to me that the actual Postnuke site neglects to include these features. Either that I'm just rather dense ;)

That being said, does anyone have any recommendations for me, for beginner's resources? I've looked around the web links section and found piles of different places, but all seem to be geared to people already "in the know" for Postnuke content.

Hehe, just some (hopefully) constructive complaining. Wish me luck in getting my website working, lol :D

    You mean these things?

The problem is, they only appear in the news posts associated with that particular topic. What if all of the last posts on the main page are of one kind, say a category has "fallen off" the main page because of lack of updates. I don't know where to go for them otherwise.

I've finally discovered that the archive is listed on the right column jammed under the ads as "past articles", so I can finally browse the older stuff.

One of the more annoying aspects of the Postnuke community I've come across is the fact you have to register on virtually everybody's site just to download a block or theme... sure it's nice to have more users on your site, but frankly, 99% of them I'll never visit again. So... even though you've got a great theme, I'm gonna skip signing up for *yet another* website, haha.

Hopefully I don't come across as too cynical, I'm not trying to bash the community or anything... just my thoughts :)

That's exactly what they are, is news items. Sadly, all attempts to create a database of modules/blocks/themes hav fallen through, as it's a daunting task to try to keep up with the dead links, the new versions and compatability. Many people have tried, all have silently vanished soon after starting.

Once you start to get familiar with the PN community, you'll find there are several methods to search for modules/blocks/themes and you'll find your favorite. Keep an eye on the pnNavigator (the front page of this site) for new releases and when someone releases something new, have a look at their site and see what else they offer. Not the most efficient way, but it's the way we've got right now.

It is very annoying to find PostNuke's documentation is all over the place as well. You go to one place and it's out of date. Go to another and it's current but incomplete. Like you, the chance of me returning to some of these sites is slim and none.

It's not about members, it's about page views ;)

  • For the record, we've got Pagesetter on the site, and HammerHead an I will be working on implementing a new Modules directory in the near future. He's got limited availablity at the moment due to some ISP problems, but hopefully we'll have it ready to go soon. It's based of the system we have in place on PostNukePro (Which also hopefully will be ready to go come the first of the year).
