I'm working, slowly, on pnGroups at the moment to see if I can get it ready to add in to .8.

Is that a fixed decision (to include it in .8 ) ? If so, I would be able to say that the pncGroups is a "dropped mod"... icon_lol I see no point in continuing the pnRendering of the pncGroups... ...

(Wich is at 80% done since last june... I think......mmm where is my backup of that... )
  • It depends on if I can get it done or not. It's a minor adjustment functionally, so it shouldn't be too hard, and someone submitted a patch to me that allows for instant join groups, like pncGroups does, so it should cover the functionality of yours. I'm not sure if it will make it in the core or not, but that was the desired goal of the orriginal client, to see it there, so I'm gonna shoot for it :)

Based on what I see and on the past decisions, yours is still in pnHTML... wich will stop it from being "core included"...

And since third party mods will for most stay out of the core, there is a good chance that it'll stay out of the core... mine too of course.

Dunno... Both have the kind of features that would enhance the Group thing in PN but are they that much as to being considered anything else than ... tweaks... that they don't have a better place as separate mods ?

(I'm talking about both of them of course since they do the same thing... except the pending in your case - Guess we should've worked together on this one after all... ha ha ha !).

Hence the need to do some work on it for it to replace the core groups module as it is. I'm starting from the Groups module that is in the current 8 CVS.

pnGroups is a replacement for NS-Groups, they can co exist, but it's intended to replace it and has worked flawlessly in installations where NS-Groups was removed.

  • I'm not questioning its efficiency at all... I can say the same for mine...

I'm only trying to find a way here. We have 2 mods doing about the same thing :

Mine is almost finished in the pnRender (and 0.8 ) mode but lack one feature from yours (Pending application). On the other side, it has features yours doens't have : Max user setting, groupmaster, etc... http://dev.pnconcept.com/index.php?module=projects&view=1&id=2

Yours is in a late state that you will have to rewrite it anyway from the ground up (unless it's already done).

    -------------

So this leads back to my first question, was this "replacement" discussed or only an ambition you have ? (sorry if the word is not the right one or not sounding right, just woke up and my english stayed in bed he he ! ).

    --------------
Guess I'll go with the offer : Merging.

The fact is that I don't care (and won't start any war on that icon_lol ) who's mod will or should replace the actual. It's either yours, mine or leave them both at the state of third party.

But I really think that the 0.8 could benefits from both...

Since I have CVS access and that I don't remember hearing that a dev took the Groups mod to his own to work on... it's kind of free to work on.

I could take yours and mine, merge them and commit most of both features to the CVS when it's finished and after you have validate it (of course).

In the meantime, the CVS Groups mod (with the work done) could be extracted from the CVS, renamed "pnGroups" (and all functions) for the use of people now while waiting for the 0.8 package... all will already be in the official Groups mod.

Do I sound correctly ?...... my mind really stayed in bed and left me only a headache... icon_lol

Anyway... guess you got my meaning... icon_lol

I thought yours was an add on, not a replacement module. Having only the new features.

As I said above, I've discussed it with Mark.

As I said before, mine and yours are both GPL'd feel free to merge it, I don't care. I've been paid for it and not getting any financial gain out of it at this point :)

  • sheesh... when 2 people don't care, it's hard to make any point.... icon_rolleyes

Yes you are right but 1 or 2 functions to add, I doubt it would be a big fuss... I was speaking of efficiency but I think I may have missed the mark with my lazy vocab.

So I'll put it in a simpler way....

Would you mind if I take mine (unreleased pnRender one), rip the useless twinkies (to come back to a clean 0.8 style) and have yours aside to add the missing things and to stay on the same output ground...

And to make THAT the "Groups" mod in the 0.8 CVS ? (no PN or pnc before the big word...)

(Although there still need some validation from the team as it is still a add-on imo to have any regular user apply to a group... But... why not icon_lol ).

The resumé of the features would then be something like :

    • [*:8b4e005664] Define Public / Non-Public groups
    • [*:8b4e005664] Define Max users for a group.
    • [*:8b4e005664] Define Open / Close group
    • [*:8b4e005664] Define Description (Each Group)
    • [*:8b4e005664] Define Group moderation On/Off (Each group)
    • [*:8b4e005664] All the basic Groups mod features it had.
    • [*:8b4e005664] ---- Create/Remove Groups
    • [*:8b4e005664] ---- Add/Remove User
  • Go for it. As to it being an Add On, I see it more as a means to enhance the capabilities of the core. As it is, it shouldn't add too much bulk to the code base, and I think that both of our modules have been used enough to make it a reasonable add in to the core.

  • Wow! When I started this thread I never thought I was putting myself in a position to normalize relationships between the two countries...

« Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité » meets "In God We Trust"!

PostNuke really can make a better world...what's next...re-dedication of La Statue de la Liberté...perhaps the first CMS to win the Nobel Peace Prize?

  • I'll go for it then... wink
