Since most of the themes are released under GPL license, you can change what ever you want.
AutoTheme have 2 lines that needs to be kept, otherwise you can change that as well.
But if you coul dchange something, what would that be?
oic, thx,
If i could change, i would change/edit the header.
BTW, i saw some themes with powered by postnuke etc.. images below, can i remove those? -

That isn't entirely true.
Depending on the licensing of the theme you cannot always remove the copyrights from the theme.

Yes, each theme designer may release their theme under different licenses and they may not be GPL. If they require you to keep a copyright or link on the visible page then it should be clearly stated in any docs or license files that came with the theme. As for "most" AutoTheme themes or other themes for that matter, you can change anything in the theme (graphics, text, colors, layout, etc...).
When themes are restricted they will normally restrict the redistribution of the included images, etc..

Oic, some themes i d/led do not have any docs included so i am not sure whether i can change or remove things.
I want to remove some images off the header, you don't tell me you want a website with a header links/image/logos to the theme author website. Can i remove those?
Erm does that mean that those themes without docs , i can remove or change anything that is visible that i like?

Can i change the theme name? How? You know the selection box in profile where people select themes to use on that website, like if the theme name is "eg" , it is shown as "eg" in the selection box, i want to ask how to change the theme name from "eg" to "example" in the theme selection dropdown list/box. -

If there are no docs and no restrictions or licenses in any of the files then see if you can find the author's contact info or contact them at the website where you downloaded them. Most likely it is fine to do whatever you want with them. Even the ones with restrictions are normally geared towards you redistributing the theme, not restricting what you can change in the theme for your own use.
If it's an AutoTheme, then just rename the theme dir to change the theme name.

What if its not a AutoTheme?
The real answer to the question is the same as it would have been at the start of this thread - simply use your common sense.... Follow any documentation that's supplied with the theme.

Ha! Good answer Mark, but I think he was talking about this:

Just rename the directory, but then open theme.php and do a replace on all 'eg' and change to 'example'. Works most times.

That'll teach me to join a thread the middle and espcially after getting home from the pub..... Aplogies for me getting the wrong end of the stick - must install a breathalyzer on my PC.....
Xanthia themes can be renamed by renaming the directory. In general it depends on if the designer has used the image path tag rather than coding the path. Legacy PHP themes are a complete mix of coding styles; some you'll be able to rename the directory others will require a search and replace after the rename but they can all be done.
