I'm sure I can't be the first person to suggest this, but the fact that I can't find it anywhere simply boggles my mind. Portals such as this seem to be aimed primarily at discussion, or at a combination of news&discussion. Sure you have the few out there that don't have forums activated, but then what's the point?
Anyway.
Given the above assumption, why the heck aren't article comments tied automatically to a forum thread? I can't imagine it would be THAT hard to create a thread in a selectable forum with the article content and it be posted as though as from the original author. I mean... why settle for crude little comments areas on each topic when you have the resources of an entire forum at your disposal?

Because a Forum is not a core component for PostNuke. Many sites won't use a Forum, so the comments system works fine. That said, there IS a modified version of EZComments available that uses the forums for comments. Check out the http://mods.postnuke.com

This would just be the another step towards having Slashdot for PostNuke. The solution is to stop hacking partial solutions and write a module that facilitates looking at popular forum topics as news articles instead of trying to push news article comments into a forum. -

True. DeluxePortal does this too and I'd probably go with that system if it didn't cost so much. :(
