Registration  Bottom

  • I hope somebody takes my comment here seriously, it'd be very nice to see this included in .8

Registration for postnuke sure is a hassle. Either you have to check your e-mail, get that password, then change it. Typically users neglect changing it, and cannot remember that password. So registration can be a hassle for registers.

As admins you can let people pick passwords, but no verification is needed. So they can give you a bs e-mail, or remain anonymous for trolling. Sucks for site owners.

I'd love to see a password selection option, but users must verify their account.

    Thanks
  • Yes I agree,

I know there are hacks around to acheive this, but many are not comfortable with making changes to core files, and really this should be something to consider when cretaing the user registration system for .8

I think the best method would be as described by "the Godfather", ie

User signs up and gets to choose thier own password. Account activation URL is sent by email and the account becomes active after this is clicked.

Another idea could also be the integration of a time out feature as well - ie if an account is not activated within so many days the user is wiped form the database.

  • We have exactly this setup in the .8x users module already although it's not quite finished as yet. A user can signup, choose thier password but thier account must be properly activated via an account activation form.

  • Just for my two cents... I think the sending of the activation link should be optional. Some PN users don't have e-mail servers to use which makes sending an activation link a little hard. If possible it would be nice to be able to turn the 'send activation link' off so that users are automatically activated upon registration.

    *:edit:*
oops, didn't realize "(Send users their password by mail after registration) " also allowed a user to choose their password. Sorry icon_mad
  • The sign up is way, way under appreciated. It's the best time to collect demographics but it's not easily done without hacking. Sadly, we've forgotten the lesson of our bricks and mortar ancestors. Get to know your flock they'd tell us but we're too busy playing with the way the sign hangs above the front door to know who are flock is.

It's been promised for years and I assume Mark has it all under control but I'd love to see the whole registration process rebuilt from the ground up because it's really penalizing some of the higher volume sites who are seeing missded opportunities because they can't verify who their users are.
