Any suggestions on how to split a news area up into 2 columns?
http://newscenter.ninn.org = is an example of what I am talking about.

Do you mean something like this? (I tried to load that fire site but it's pathetically slow and bloated and I gave up.)
If so, that site was done with PageEd. Read this for details on two-column news.
Another idea would be to find a theme which alternates the topic graphic between left/right when it displays articles (there's a few of them around). That will give you the core logic you need. Then it's just a matter of changing the left/right to start and close table rows at the appropriate times and you'll have what you want done by your theme.
[Added a few minutes later: Gee, while I was editing that post (and jumping around between other Mozilla tabs), Nate came along and answered the question with a much shorter and much more thorough post.
