I've been trying to find some blog software and ew blog has been discarded (no one answered queries) which is a little sad but there you go.
I've removed the blocks and modules created but now when I submit normal news I get
_EW_BLOG_SHOWN options
in the submit news page - any ideas how to get rid of it please?

I'm not personally familiar with EW Blog, but did it include a replace of pages in the news modules’ directory as part of the install? That’s my suspicion from what you describe. If so the fix would be to write over the edited news module files with originals from the PN install zip.
