I was thinking of taking a free AutoTheme and redraw the blocks and change the colors to make it look like i want. ...
(seems to me that would be easier than doing a theme from scratch)
I did that with the theme I use now but its not an auto theme..

I do that. I took the Squares theme which is a legacy theme and made 10 different color variations of it. I also have converted some legacy themes to autothemes and changed the colors and such. I am good with all of the mechanics of building these themes, but I am not a good idea man. I have a hard time coming up with my own designs. I am good at copying and modifying.

I think there is also an example theme included with the AT-Lite module that is pretty easy to follow. Acutally it's really just like making a normal web-template; all you have to do is take into account that the blocks will have to be able to duplicate without breaking the layout.
