Left column loads to center, then bounces left.  Bottom

  • This is just one of those little things. Anyone ever notice how the left column loads toward center and then "snaps" into position whe you first visit a PN site? This bugs me.

To minimize this, I've hard coded the index page. This helps but I'm thinking there's got to be a better way. Any suggestions?

  • As long as I'm on the subject of left columns, I think it's worth pointing out that, as far as I know, that column is most important as far as search engines are concened. Speaking in terms of a typical PostNuke layout, that is.

Hard coding also allow me to put more emphasis on what would normally be the second column and I think this helps.

  • ..It's got to have something to do with how themes are read.. in the standard 3 col layout, the left block is the first read.. then center or index module and the right isn't seen until the footer function.. it's definitely more prevalent on some sites than others.. but, agreed.. it's an obnoxious oddity.

.. might have something to do with using tables across functions too.. from header to footer.. hmmm.. now you've got me curious.. ;)

  • Hey IR!

I've been fooling around with this. I personally don't have as much of a problem as most sites I've visited but it is annoying.

I think the issue of the search engine is what really needs mitigation because most PN sites put the "meat" of their index page in the center column. As I understand it, and I'm certainly no expert on this, Google weighs the value of the content by when it loads. The theory (I guess) is that information "above the fold" is more important; but on the PN site you can still be above the fold and late to load. If this is true it's a good argument for putting text, not just graphics, in the header.

  • ..hey Slugger :)

..I'm a subscriber to that theory.

I wrote more about this last night, but I was "half-in-the-bag".. the scotch had a hold of me.. haha.. it probably wouldn't have made much sense.
