I'd like to suggestion a new forum, one titled "PHP Clues and Tid-Bits" or something similar.
Here's my thinking -- feel free to tell me where/why I'm wrong.
A lot of people discover PostNuke and quickly want to start learning PHP (just look at these forums, they're full of such questions!).
Obviously, this isn't a site for PHP tutorial classes. BUT, a forum of PostNuke-related PHP questions would be very appropriate and very helpful to many people.
Post a BIG, STICKY topic at the top saying that your question may be ignored if it is a FAQ, too stupid, too deep, and/or that RTFM answers will be given (hopefully with links provided).
For example, I recently ran across a post by nate_02631 in the themes forum with advice on how to code themes -- the echo or not to echo HTML issue -- which clearly was PHP related and a veritible gem. Such tid-bits will prove invaluable to bringing someone up to speed in PHP and will result in more people contributing to PostNuke.
Again, the idea here is not to do full tutorials, but to offer some help, guidance, and code snippets. People will quickly learn that they'll be ignored if they ask too many dumb questions, but PHP gurus will sometimes want to play in the mud and will come down and give some sage advice at times. Such a forum could prove a very valuable aid and resource.

Because this is the PostNuke support forums, not PHP support forums, there are numerous sites that cater to PHP in a more general fashion, SitePoint.com and DevShed probably the best two I've ever used.

I think rather that the PN staff would be able to operate more efficiently with one forum for non-programmers who want to just set up a website with a minimum of hassles and another discussion area for programmers who want to make new stuff. Of course, they would both be open to the other people to browse or contribute, but non-programmers would be less likely to post qusetions in a forum where most things were over their heads.
This would go a long way in eliminating "newbie rage" -

But isn't Postnuke by extension just a package of PHP scripts and therefore these forums are very much about PHP? This is something I've asked about in the past and seen asked a couple other times. There seems to be support amongst the community for it, and isn't that what is supposed to guide this project and it's websites?
I don't understand flat refusals for new forum requests. If the new forum doesn't work out (not enough visitors, not enough people to answer questions, etc...), it can easily be removed. And if a user doesn't want to see it, they can simply not visit it. Recently, there has also been support for adding a commercial announcement forum and I believe the same analysis can be applied.
If a "Postnuke in Education" forum can get approved, despite having only a handful of visitors, then a PHP supprt forum is long, long overdue. -

It won't do any good, but I agree with Spire and KB. I'm a neophyte PHP programmer and I'd love to have a forum to discuss Postnuke related PHP issues with other programmers.
It would be nice if Postnuke management made these decisions. Since when did the moderators take over the Postnuke project? -

I would also have to come in here and say having a PHP supprt forum is a very good suggestion, as has been said already a lot of Postnuke is in PHP so there for shouldent there be a "PHP" forum or to give it a better name "PN PHP Clues and Tip-Bits"
I for one would love to know more about the PHP thats used in PN and how it makes it tick. IMO the forums should expand with postnuke as it expands and the same go's with the members of the forums at Postnuke.com as thay grow, the forums should now and then grow to cover more for the users.

1. I misread the orriginal post. I though he was refering to a general PHP forum, which pretty much shouldn't happen, as I said, there are better places for general PHP help. Rather than attack me for my opinion of why the forum was a bad idea, which is all that it was, it could have been pointed out that the OP was refering to a PostNuke related forum.
2. Keith has the right idea, developer discussions would be better outside of the general forums, people who need help setting up PostNuke don't need to have things complicated by stumbing across development threads, unfortunately, developer.postnuke.com is gone, and it did have forums that could have served this purpose.
3. Management DOES make the decsions. However I as the head moderator have a right to express why I think a new forum is a bad idea. I was not saying it won't happen, I was saying I don't think it's a good Idea and why.
And to Warwick, the moderators did not take over PostNuke, we are tasked with these forums and keeping them on focus, that means things that shouldn't be here will be removed for review, that includes announcements that belong in the subsites, arguments that serve no purpose but to incite the person they are directed at, and petty snide comments aimed at anyone. Instead of flying off the handle with public snide remarks about me, contact me privately if you have a problem with something.
All that said, I'm planing on a new site in the near future, NukeDevs.com that will have a developer's discussion forum, and eventually an eLance type of service for CMS (PostNuke, PHP-Nuke, Xaraya ect) development projects to be posted and bid on. I just need to streamline some of the sites I already host.

Not that I see.
People that don't get their way tend to attack him.
He has been given guidelines by which to MODERATE the forums.
If someone cannot abide by guidelines on a forum then they shouldn't be posting there.
I can remember you completely reloading your shoutbox on your site to remove one of my comments posted there.
Should I be all up in arms about you moderating that?

Frankly Mars, I couldn't ever figure out what you were up in arms about in the first place. You posted twice that I had mistated the license concerning your free themes. You were correct. In both cases, I had forgotten that not all the free themes were mine. Therefore, I removed them. You mistakenly equated that decision with my offer to you to develop custom themes for my website. I thought I was paying you a compliment because I think you make great themes. You believe that I was retaliating against you. I explained that nothing could be further from the truth. You don't believe me, but that is the truth.
I don't remember what you posted in my Shoutbox, but it was inaccurate, so I deleted it.
My comment to Michael was not a personal attack. It was an observation. There is a feeling amongst the community lately that we have no say in anything that happens. I have not been particularly vocal on that point, but the forums are full of extended discussions. -

Warwick,
Community discussion on some topics is not warrented, on others it is. On the topic of the release announcement decision, there were enough complaints about the themes forum in particular feeling like an advertising forum to validate the decision, but out side fo that, the subsites exist for the announcement of new releases, the forums are for support.
As I said, in this case, I misread the purpose of the proposed forum, but I still think it'd be better relegated to a new subsite or a different site all together, so as to not dilute the search for support on these forums.
The only other suggestion I outright said not a good idea to was an off topic forum. These forums have been let to languish far too long and an off topic forum would not help anything.

When is a community discussion not warranted in an open source community? The thing I most resent is the appearance of one (or a few people) making decisions that are detrimental to the community. The only posts I've seen on this subject were those that disagreed with the decision.
Again, where is Postnuke management. I'd like to see Vanessa, Harry or Drak speak to this issue. I am led to understand that there is not universal agreement on this decision. -

I don't understand why a developer's discussion forum would be innappropriate right here. Why go do a different site for this? -

Craig, my thought process on that is that putting the more technical development type stuff in the same forum as the basic support for people just having problems will create more confusion for the newbies.

Then create a new forum - cripes this isn't rocket science. If we can have an education forum that few people use, then why can't you grant a simple request for a PHP tips forum. Leave it unmoderated if necessary. -

To summarize, folks are asking for a PHP help forum, a commercial projects forum and an off-topic forum.
If the only arguement against these is that it will harm the search capabilities, then as Infopro said above, it won't make a lick of difference as it already sucks. Personally, I'd like to see vBulletin integrated into PN, but that's another story.
What really shocks/irks me is that the pnMGMT has been silent on the whole thing, with the exception of Vanessa backing a commercial forum. It doesn't help that HammerHead and Mark West are both away right now, as they are the two most visible members of the support community.
