Proper Etiquette  Bottom

  • Is it proper to make available for download on your personal site work that was done by another person, and is available on their site?

Example: Bob writes a new Block and makes it available on his site. Then Fred also makes it availble on his site, without asking bob's permission. Is this right?

    Just wondering

  • There are several things that make this impossible to answer.

    1. Is Bob's Module GPL? If so, then Fred is not doing anything wrong unless:
    2. Is Fred linking to the file on Bob's server? If so then he is doing something wrong by stealing Bob's bandwidth essentially.

  • The best way to do this is to just ask the author. Its not worth hard feelings.
  • I am going to start to offer PN downloads on our site but first I always>
1,ask the author if its ok to have them on our site to d/l and I always have a link to the homepage of said d/l.
2, only offer GLP programs and Themes
3, Never link to some other sites d/l, taking other sites bandwidth is theft plan and simple.

I only see a problem if Fred offers Bobs block to d/l on his site and trys to take creddet for said block for him self, or links his d/l to bobs d/l and is stealing bobs BW.

But It is mostly with themes that I have seen in the past some sites offering others work and trying to make out its theres.

Thats why I stopped to make GPL themes.

  • Well, I left a message at the person's website and have received no reply. I understand that they are GPL and I have no real recourse, but I still think it is wrong for someone to post my work for download without a link to my site, my name, or without asking permission.

I do not want to stop making GPL anything, I think people should just learn some respect. I posted a message after making Nate's post about classic themes into a downloaded pdf asking him if he had any objections. On my site the download of the file has a link back to his original post, and has his avator and name right out in the open. Had Nate objected, I would have taken it down. I think this is the way to go as far as offering other people's work.

    My 2 cents.

  • In my opinion the prime example of unethical implementation of the GPL is that demonstrated by the Envolution CMS Management - they charge users to access a database of themes that were made by 3rd party theme designers. They do this without the permission of the theme designers and do not make it easily known that people can get these themes for free.

It is hard to say what is right or wrong due to the nature of GPL and it's philosophy - In my opinion it is ok to redistribute works as long as you have made a meaningful contribution to the code - ie made it better, added more features, etc and NOT just grabbing the original distro and uploading it to your site.

The thing to remember is the fact that many people that release items under the GPL rely on the web traffic it generates to promote their services and commercial products.

    Just my 2 cents :)

  • That is my point. I have all of the themes I have created or modified on my site for download. I want people to go there to get the free themes in the hopes that one or two might need the other for pay services we offer. But, if other people are offering my themes for download, I get less traffic.

Oh well, I guess that is how things work.
  • Just use another license, even make one yourself - basically you will be looking to put a non-distribution clause in it.

  • after they reminded me that the themes were GPL, they removed them anyway.

I do not dispute a person's right to redistribute GPL items. I just think it is rude to offer other people's work without using their name or a link, especially when the same media is available on the author's site.

    Problem resolved.
