Open groups, please  Bottom

  • There's a mod for phpbb that allows open groups. This means a group can be open to anyone, closed, secret, or whatever depending on how the group owner wants it. It's a very cool feature.

Can it be done with postnuke? If not, I'd like to ask if it can be implemente sometime in the future.

You see, my idea is than fooling around with multisites and all those hassles (my server is configured wrong), I could just modularize content according to different groups and when a user wants to view some content (offensive stuff, for example) they can sign up for the (offensive content) group without everyone asking me every time they want to join a new group. Users could completely customize what content they want to see according to their interests. For example, if they don't need a new job, no need for them to see the jobs module or news about new jobs.
  • Maybe My post was a bit confusing:

the basic groups are OK: admin, registered user, guest, etc.

Also, the ability to make new "secure" groups is fine "as-is". For example, "editors", "recruiters", "marketers" , all with different permissions - that's all fine.

What I also want to do is to make different groups that members can join or un-join whenever they want to, and for thse groups to have permissions to view different content. So a person can choose to join group a, b, or c (or all three, I don't care), but I want them to have the choice to select which content (groups) they want to view.

You see, I want to customize the user experience, but I don't want to deal with administering user groups myself. I want users to be able to join some groups whenever they want to, but keep other groups "as-is".

    Does anyone understand this?
  • In the end I did a search on the internet and fond this:

Does postnuke plan to do anything like this in the future?

This really is the future of web design, guys. One website with customized content for individual users. I've wasted 6 months trying to get multisites to work, only to learn my server isn't configured right. All the time, I was headed in the wron direction anyway!

Open groups (or Channels) where the admin can allow different users to access differnt content based on permissions is a much more efficient solution than multisites in most cases, I believe.
  • maybe chestnut's pncGroups hack is worth a visit...

  • pnGroups will eventually provide this functionality. Right now it only allows for admin approved additions to a group, but I plan to have instant join and resign abilities eventually, but have several irons in the fire at the moment.

  • Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

I also thank mhalbrok for taking time out to answer. I'll be looking forward to this in future versions.

Actually, the channels solution is not 100% what I want so I'll check out the hack.
