I want to start making my own themes from scratch not with autothemes I know HTML and basic PHP. Is there like a tutorial or something that could tell you have to make a theme?

Use Xanthia, it's a core theme system starting with .750. I think PHPNut has a basic primer posted and there is extensive documentation shipped with Xanthia.

Old-school themes will still be viable for the foreseeable future, though not as flexible as Xanthia with respect to block placement, etc.. they still got some life left in 'em...

That's partially because it's not as robust either. A lot of people don't think AutoTheme is all that easy either.

No doubt it is a matter or what you learn and are comfortable with, but my (admittedly minimal) attempts to use/learn Xanthia had caused my to throw up my hands in frustration. I even read the stickies in the XTE forum the other day. If the list of errors/required changes is up-to-date, then the whole thing is a mess. If its out-dated, then it ought to be removed. I looked at the list of required changes to make it work and thought "this just ain't worth it." -

I have started to look at Xanthia lately, but I am not happy to use it in production until it's more stable - it does show a lot of promise, but I believe Auotheme is the easier option, mainly due to the fact that the theme variables are stored in file as opposed to the database and you do not need to create an init file.
Actually I used the old Xanthia as well for awhile, until I found AutoTheme that is...
Kindest regards
