So, instead of starting a flamewar with your bad assumptions, insensitive comments and need to be right, please move on to some other topic.

You know, he's probably right, I should move on to some other topic. But the point is the rest of the world shouldn't need to walk around on egg shells because you or anyone else was stupid enough to become an addict of anything, drugs or other.

If you murder somebody I'll label you a murderer, if you rape somebody I'll label you a sex offender, if you do drugs I'll label you an addict. You made the choice to get the label when you performed the action. If you are now sensitive to anyone using the word addict then it is your own fault. That's just one of the consequences of making the choice. We aren't going to change the English language just because you now fit one of the terms and are having your feelings hurt. You had the choice to ignore the title or ask Drak privately to change it. You instead chose to post it to a public forum letting the world know that you fit the profile. Having other people discuss their opinions on it is a consequence of that choice. And if you want to classify those comments as insensitive that's fine, sometimes the truth hurts.
This is an open discussion. I'm just letting the decision makers know that some of us don't have a problem with the existing system and that it is a select few that are reading more into the label than is really there.

    Drak,
My $0.02 says keep the pnAddict and change anyone that has a problem with it to be pnSensitive, pnPansy, or some other appropriate title.

If you want to change mine to be pnInsensitive, pnDickHead, pnAssHole, or anything else you can think up or dig up on me I don't care. It will mean just as much to me as my current pnHelper title does. Or maybe we should just silence everyone who might make any sort of comment that could be taken the wrong way by someone. We could have all the pnCorp group spend there whole day removing posts that might hurt someones feelings. Or people could just suck it up and stop taking it personally.
  • r3ap3r - I think you have raised a good point here - if someone doesn't wish to take part in the *ranks system, we can have a generic rank we can apply like pnUser. I think regardless of changing pnAddict, this should be a policy of the forums. (* rank is a pnphpbb functionality term).

  • Why not at 500 posts or higher allow the user to submit what they would like for the title?

  • Oh, never thought that it would be that intensive discussion.

My point still is: drop these (not-so-)funny ranks at all, keeping the "honour ranks". I really don't like them.

  • I've done a dangerous thing. pnAddict has now become pnProfessional since actually more than two people suggested it my email and there was no concensus in this thread. Anyone who doesnt want to be part of the numbered system can be marked a pnUser on request.

What about a user ratings system for posts - you know, did you find this post useful? Or is that a bit passe?

That is the next generation of CMS methodology: News and Forum will combine into a Slashdot style component.

Well, given it's 2 pages, some one obviously does. Honestly, some people have legitimate issues with the use of the term pnAddict, to someone who struggles with Addiction, that name could be taken as a slap in the face, trivializing the hardships of an Addict.

I don't think that there is anyone sitting around trying to shoot up in-between module installs.

I'd actually enjoy taking on that title. It's a hell of a lot better than pnFreshman.

If your self esteem is tied to a tagline in some on-line forum then I feel sorry for you. Maybe you should find a good shrink, because your problems probably extend further than you think.

Spoken like someone who has no background in psychology or dealing with addicts. Addiction is a very serious issue, and people justifiably could feel that the use of pnAddict was a trivialization of being an Addict.

Nothing personal, but I'd have to side against the "touchy feely" approach. I understand that it's a real issue that must be addressed responsibly. However, this community is not AA. pnAddict is appropriate here. It may not be appropriate when dealt with in-context, but this is an open source CMS community.

  • There is no more pnAddict, it's now pnProfessional. Anyone not wishing to have any rank can now ask to opt-out, they will become pnUser.

  • Ahhh, one post closer to godhood....

    How about inverting the names.

Put more complimentary names at the bottom of the scale, thus making new users feel more comfortable and more likely to keep with the community.

Make people with a lot of posts have less complimentary names like pnPower_Monger, or pnWhyDoesntThisGuyJoinTheTEam?

As was stated before, I think people who are really concerned about postnuke could care less what title they have.

But actually I'd recomend pnUser until whoever moderates this forum decided they've said something useful, and ONLY THEN should they get a title. You see, the title should give us newbies something to distinguish the wannabes from those who really know. Quantity of posts tell us nothing.

In a nutshell, this title system is just a bad idea that the phpbb team had and now they don't even use this feature (I think). Tells you something when the programmers who made the feature have decided not to use it.

Unless, of course, you just want to increase your hit counts ...

Get jiggy wit dat reverse psych!

I'd say the idea is at least worth a test run if only to report the comparative results!

Say avg posts / day over the test period divided by the individual total post count? Compare same formula for previous month. That'd be groovy, doncha think??? :)
