Is there any way for my users to upload their own custom avatars via the PN account screen and if I intergrate phpBB and upload an avatar through there, will it effect that user's PN account too?

There is an avatar upload module that you can use.
I am not sure about the phpbb it i think it had a few conflicts with the avatar and something else but I think it was fixed. Not 100% on that though.
