Why are there certain required theme zones? What if I don't want to have them? I already have a "theme" for my site, I would like to have just one theme zone. the master template. From the master template I could remove all my include statments and replace them with blocks.. is this possible?

The required zones are the ones need for basic operation of theme in the PN environment. The two news ones are required for the news module to operate, two table ones are requried for many non-API compliant modules (that use opentable/closetable functions).

Some themes will have other required zones based on the designers choice. If you don't want any zone then don't use it in your master template. For instance left blocks can be left out by leaving out the tag

The two news zones will go with PN .8x. In .7x the news module is very closely tied into the core product with special requirements in the theme for this module. Under .8x the news module is like any other. The table zones will stay but could concievably be removed later in the once the non-API comliant module design starts to dis-appear.

Hi Mark. What are the specific required zones? I just tried upgrading a XTERC2 theme to XTERC3 by adding the header and footer and everything works except that the news module shows up empty.

I can't think of any change between RC2 and RC3 that would cause news to be empty... Is it just the news or all module output?

Just the News module output. It comes out empty while the left and right blocks show. All the other modules seem to be working fine.

This particular site I'm talking about was a clean install of PN 0.726-3 with a clean install of XTE RC3 (that included the latest index.php I got from CVS onto an empty database.

Ok. That strange problem is now gone after I wiped the database and tried a clean install of PN 0.750 Gold RC2.
