First theme, work in progress. Feedback?  Bottom

  • I've been working on a theme for my site for the last few days. It's just a modified ExtraLite theme (for reasons unknown I call it XXLite). No real bells and whistles yet, but maybe someday soon.

    Here's a demo link: XXLite

I'd like to hear how fast it loads (page generation aside, my server is not so stellar at processing database requests), how it looks, how it feels, etc.

    Thanks very much!

    Frank
  • Very neat looking theme - loaded pretty quick. The Random WIP image is throwing out the width of the right handed side columns. Other than that it looks great, I like the detail taken with the shadow behind the boxes, a lot of sites dont bother neatening up the shadow around all the corners - but you have.
  • Thanks. The graphics were pretty simple to work out... getting them cut into the righ size pieces was less simple.

As far as that random block goes, that side seems to be a little narrow anyhow, so I'll probably just set a min width on all the sideblocks.

For my next features, I'll be working on a more interesting top area with a site title and some prettier graphics, a non-irritating background of some sort, and some detail to make the theme look a little less clean and a bit more metalic/tech.
  • Maybe try and get the titles to fit within the box headers as well - looks a bit untidy wrapping like that

    Cheers
  • I'm not too sure about what to do about the wrapping titles. Any suggestions?
  • Not meaning to be trite but - shorter titles?
  • Heh, I did think of that. I'd love a more generic solution that allowed me (or perhaps someone else) to insert longer titles without having to worry about it, but I think I'll let it go for this version of the theme :)

I'm gonna hit the upper portion with some magic now before I get too excited and start another theme.
  • I've added a header with some "dynamic interest." The search box needs a little help, but the random image part seems to work just fine.

Now I'd like to do something with the footer portion of the page, where the PostNuke, ADOdb, and PHP logos are. Can I do this without changing the appearance of every other theme?

By the way, would anybody be interested in downloading this theme from me, once it's 100%?

Here's the demo link again, for your not-having-to-scroll-back-to-the-top pleasure.

    Thanks,
    Frank
  • I think the footer is set in it's own table. Changes dont really impact upon the rest of the site unless you start mucking around with widths too much.

If you want people to download the theme then I suggest a news item in the themes section.

Last thing the Welcome message block isn't centred across the width of the centre column (only takes up half), sort of looks a bit wierd.

    Cheers
  • I'm a bit torn about that header. It looks pretty good, but it doesn't stretch because my random images are only so big. Perhaps I should put the top of the left blocks next to it, to bump it over.

I'm also trying to be careful of small monitors... it needs some work.

Anyhow, I've started fiddling with another theme. This was more of a learning experience than anything. ;)

Thanks to everyone for their continuing help!
  • IMHO, (although lacking the skills to develop a theme) I think there is need for a generic, atttractive theme which meets some of the basic needs of the Accessibility type sites.

Limited (or no) tables, Alt tags named, sequential tabbing. I think a theme which met those requirements would be a big hit.

The /themes.postnuke.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=679"" title="Minimalist ">Minimalisttheme is probably the closest I have seen.

FYI these are 4 of the sites which offer different types of testing and may prove useful.
