My wishlist  Bottom

  • First of all, thanks to you for putting together this CMS.

    Now, a few requests:
1)I've typed up two brilliant icon_rolleyes responses to other people on this forum only to have them lost when I was sent to the "login" page. I was already logged in, but maybe I spent too much time typing? Could you extend the session timeout or whatever so I can ponder icon_rolleyes what I'm going to write?

2)I wouldn't say I'm a complete imbecile, but after 4 hours of multisites I'm starting to wonder ... could the multisites install process be a bit more automated? I'm trying to do it with a file system rather than sub-domains (because I have to start paying after 10 sub-domains), but the tutorial for that file system method seems to be lost in cyberspace.

3)Since the address box for portals gives the user no clues as to where he is on a site, I'd really like to see a bread crumb like phpbb has. I think they really help people orient themselves on sites. This is especially important in a multisite.

    Well, that's my wishlist.
  • 1. Supposedly, login sessions are set for an hour but reality shows that it is a much shorter time period. I know how frustrating it can be to lose a post, particularly a lengthy one.

Here's what I do to prevent that (using Windows):
    - When I've finished composing a post, I copy it onto the clipboard
    - If I get the login screen, I login
    - I then go back to my post. I use Opera as my primary browser and my post is still there. Other browsers may refresh and get rid of the post text. That's why having it in the clipboard is so helpful. Other forums have taught me this lesson.

    2. If we're thinking of the same tutorial, it's not lost at all. For one thing, I have a link to it on my site. For another, here it is http://www.athomeandabout.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Subjects&file=index&req=viewpage&pageid=4

    //snipped for brevity\\

Regardless of what Drak has it set to - he should triple it IMHO!

  • 2. I just remembered something. A few months ago, there was a discussion about making multi-sites easier. Someone may be working on it. However, the chosen method is none too attractive to many of us. Unless he has changed his mind, the solution won't be a module but a version of PN that has enhacements included for multi-sites.

I don't care for solutions like that. They stray from the main path of development and there's no telling how that will affect other modules. There's also no way of knowing if they will be kept up with each release of PN. There's a big danger of being orphaned when one relies on off beat solutions. Support may be minimal or non existent. It might be acceptable for minor features, but not for major ones.

I know of one such case right now. A few weeks ago, someone told me about MobyThreads, a hacked version of PHPBB that adds a threaded view. The developers of PHPBB are dead set against ever adding this feature to their program. I installed PHPBB and the MobyThread mod for the benefit of those PN users interested in it (I already use a program that offers both views and is fully supported by the developer)

I posted a support question on January 9 and it is still unanswered. Fortunately, I managed to find a solution on my own. On another problem, one about themes, I managed to find a clue by reading posts on the PHPBB forums. With that, I deduced the solution (though there is a minor point I haven't figured out - color in the scrollbar not working)

That is a partial view of being orphaned. Unfortunately, I wouldn't hold out any hopes of a good automated solution anytime soon.
  • 1. I usually only do the clipboard thing if I have a heads up. But you know how easy it is to forget and just press "submit" without thinking "This might get lost".

    2. I know this link: http://www.athomeand…q=viewpage&pageid=4

It's for the "standard" installation of multisites with multiple subdomain names.

The dead link is the one talked about in this article: http://news.postnuke…le=article&sid=2151

I (and I think some others) would like to set up multisites on one domain using files rather than sub-domains. Looks like someone figured it out and then their site vanished.

I take your point on mobythreads - But isn't multisites part of the "core" modules?

Anyway, it's just a request. I'll mes around with it when I have time.

All too well. The next time it happens, try going back and see if your post is still there.

This might help. While the article is gone, the name and e-mail of the author is there. You might want to contact him or her and see if a copy was retained. If so, please let me know and I'll provide a permanent home for it.

Yes, but it doesn't seem to do much, if anything. I think all it does is enable support for multisites. It has nothing to do with setting them up.

Thanks for the link. I was able to do a bit of digging and found this:

I'll try to figure it out sometime next week, I guess.
