is there any module out there that does exactly what the default news module does, but instead gathers the data from rss feeds?
example:
i have a project hosted on sourceforge, where full text of project news is provided and i want that to be the news on my project web site also
i know theres an rss block, but it isnt very customizable, and doesnt work like the news module does
i want it to look EXACTLY like the news module that ships with postnuke, but just gather its news title, contents, author, time, etc from my sourceforge site's rss feeds
this way i can keep both sites in synch without having to update both of them
is there anything that does this?

There's nothing I know of exactly like this just yet but for PN .8 i've developed a full module to replace the existing RSS block (partly due to the existing block only supporting upto RSS .91). As a by product of this module and the output being templated (as with all modules in PN .8 ) you can get something very similar to what your after.
As a demo see my lab site. I've created a feed for squirrel mail (the open source web mail client) from sourceforge as demo. Notethat I haven't styled the template exactly as per the news module on site but this is only a matter of editing a template.
There are limitations to what can be done with this as not all RSS feeds publish the description field - postnuke sites don't by default.
I know this doesn't help you now.....
