Packaging PostNuke for Distro.  Bottom

  • I have a couple suggestions for the official PN distro archives.

    1. Let's simplify the directory structure. Move the /sql folder under the current /html/docs folder or something. It's rare that the file is needed, but since it's front and center some people use it and end up with albeit minor, problems.
    2. Instead of having /html in the archive be the pnDocRoot, why not make it so that PN is in the core folder? Most people want PostNuke to be their main site, (accessed via domain.com) and many seem to upload the actual /html folder putting PN at domain.com/html. Installation would be much easier for people with either commandline or a web archive interface if they could just upload the tar.gz or zip to the server in the directory they want PostNuke to live in and run the unarchive command. One of the first things I tend to do with my PostNuke is repackage it that way anyway.
    3. Distribute an "Upgrade" archive that does not have the config.php & config-old.php in them. That way people don't overwrite their config files inadvertantly (even I who know not to upload those files sometimes forget that step).

  • 1. Im not sure I agree with, takes up extra space on webserver, and needless extra files, albeit only a few.
    2. I think that the current file setup is ok, however we need a big README file in the root explaining the reasoning behind the packaging
    3. I like :)

  • 1. I'm not sure where you get the takes up extra space from. I didn't propose it be removed, just moved to the docs folder or somewhere not quite out in front. A lot of the database related issues I see are because people used the .SQL rather than the install routines.
    2. People don't read our instructions here to upload the "CONTENTS" of the folder and upload the whole folder.
    3. Good :P

  • 1. Well if you say upload te contents of the HTML folder, that includes the docs folder inside it, the docs folder should probably be top level, especially if it contains the pnManual in the future.

  • Alternatively, a readme file could be placed top level instructing people to installation instructions in the docs folder. A lot of module developers already do this.
