You design your themes in any HTML editor you wish to use. There's a list of the commands AT uses on the site as well as in the docs for it. You put those commands in where you want things to show up.

Yes, check in modules/AutoTheme/docs/readme.html.
You can use the included themes as a starting point or start from scratch using the included themes as an example.
I hopefully will have someone working on a tutorial soon.

First off, you need to get that image sliced and diced in to an HTML file. Then read the readme. It will tell you what commands are in AutoTheme and how to use them. Place the commands where you want them.
Alternatly, there's people who may do it for you for free, and definitly people who will do it for a fee.

I don't have a clue how the background could be done without being utterly complexed but the left, center and right blocks are easy enough. You need to cut out the corners and make an image file for top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right. Then you need to cut a one pixel slice out of the side and top edges of the blocks to act as a sizable filler. That's all you'll have to do for them.
Perhaps someone else could make a suggestion for the BG because I don't know where to start for that... -

Actually, that's the beauty of AutoTheme. You don't have to slice it any certain way! You just need to plan what you want to show and where. The AutoTheme docs tell what the minimun HTML files are that you need to create and the additional ones that can be used.
Slice up your PSD however you want and leave blank areas where you want to show blocks, modules, other things such as date and time, etc.
Save that as HTML, add AutoTheme commands in the blank spots and voila!
All you need to do now is create a new theme dir with a theme.phpo from one of the other themes, copy your HTML templates there and visit the admin to configure how you want things displayed.
I'm working on user docs this week.

What you're really needing at this point is PhotoSlop help, not AutoTheme help.
