One place for downloads  Bottom

Wanna be involved? Put a note in this thread.
  • What is needed?
    • The files
    • Serverspace
    • Bandwidth
    • A (good looking) website
    • ...more...? (Too tired to work properly...)

Guess I could chip in with some space and bandwidth... Got some that's unused right now.
  • A very good idea - I've been thinking about something like that myself. However, there are a number of hurdles involved that go beyond merely server space and bandwidth. For instance, security/stability: what if a developer uploads a "not-quite-ready" version of his module to the Repository, and people auto-install it and hose their site? Or even some disgruntled member uploads a malicious module - after all, when you're installing, you're Admin, so the module's install routine could whack your site...

Another problem is how to check for versions etc. It would require all PN developers to adhere to certain rules such as naming conventions etc. Given what a diverse bunch of people the PN Community is, that might turn out to be tricky - I'm hopefully wrong, though... :)

Anyway - let's keep kicking ideas around in this thread - I'm sure something will come of it. :)
  • Hi,

I would be happy to provide you a specialized file format for internet packages. A class to work with these files is already available.

  • Hmmm... My initial idea with this is to create a place where users will find new and old releases for download, just like today... Still interested?
  • Of course still interested! :) In fact, there's no reason not to start with a "repository" that isn't much more, initially, than a great big, categorised linklist (I'm willing to play Librarian on that one), and work up to the "automated remote-install" thing for modules, themes, blocks, and everything else that makes PN such a Cool Tool.
  • Hey,

I have been watching this thread since it started, and I am very interested to hear your input on the idea.

The pnCorps are taking on the task of buidling a module database for downloading, at mods.postnuke.com. Recently this has been neglected, due to moving the site to a new server, among other things.

If you would like to help us in this project, please contact me, hammerhead AT postnuke DOT com. I would very much like your input, and if you are willing your help in constructing something similar to what you discuss.

    Thanks,

  • So far I have contacted most everyone who has shown interest in developing this system to kick the project off via a mailing list to discuss how to move forward. If you're reading this and are interested please contact me at matt AT mattdpeterson DOT com
  • My company is currently developing a site called www.lifewithlinux.com, is it going to be a script and program repository dedicated to the linux platform. We would like to donate a site, including Server space (could be on its own server if need be) and bandwith. We will be moving to a new facility at the middle of the year, at wich time the site could go life. We can offer FTP services for the site, and anything that is needed. This could be done under our lifewithlinux.com domain, or our main domain smartcanuk.com I find postnuke to be an excellent CMS system, and we will be migrating our site to it over the next few months. We can build the site as well if needed.

If this would be something the postnuke community would like to see, we can make it happen. If you have any questions please contact me at steve@smartcanuk.com
