Hi all!
Today, I had too much time on my hand so I started pondering the meaning of life. I soon got over that and decided to ponder more impotant things like the look of my home page.
When I look at my home page, I see a number of news stories, one stacked on top of the other, with the same topic icons repeating over and over and over again! It's even more pronounced if I click on a topic icon and bring up a stack of stories from the same topic.
It's not about my topic icons. I like my topic icons. I designed them myself and I think they're just about as good as it gets. (if I keep saying this someone is bound to believe me)
I have a total of 60 topics, each with a unique icon, but the majority of stories fall under the same two or three topics and, when they do, even a good design can get to look like an Andy Warhol painting when it is repeated enough times.
Now if I wasn't submitting all the news stories, myself, I could see the point of doing it the way it is done. But I am doing all my stories and I'm thinking I'd like to be able to choose a different image for each news story. Perhaps using the topic icons more as a fall back for those times when I'm either too lazy or too uninspired to drop in a custom image.
It occurs to me that, by placing unique relevant images, optimized of course, with each story, the look of my home page would be constantly changing. Yet the layout and design would always be familiar. In other words, it would be more like a printed magazine and less like a form letter.
I'm thinking you could even have a second image or a larger size of the same image, when you open up the full story. This would allow me to put photos of the author (me!), photos of the subject, graphs, you name it, on the detail page. For my stories, most of which are technical and health realted, an acompanying graphic would be a great option.
Has anybody done this? Does anybody see a problem with this? Does anybody have an idea on how to do it? Does anybody care?
I'll just sit back and wait to hear from you.

LOL! Sometimes thread like these are really worth reading. (even if I don't have an answer)
At IJ we just make sure we don't post too many of the same topic back to back. (and of course we keep images small so they don;t stand out too much) -

Normally we don`t spam the forum with advertising but you could find most of this functionality in PagEd at http://paged.anubix.net . PagEd comes with single image adding, and automatic resizing for front page.
To balance it off, there is also always Content Express. -
