I have access to but one MySQL database. I have a PostNuke site installed in it with tables named nuke_xxxxx and it's been running for a few years. And older version of PostNuke but I've modified it so heavily that I cannot really upgrade easily.

I am looking to start a second site and want to install the latest PostNuke and run with it. I worry about over-writing / messing with my existing tables. I see there is a "table prefix" field in the new PostNuke web-based installer. It's set to "nuke" my default. If I change it to something unique "newsite", etc. -- am I _100%_ guaranteed to have no data corruption on the older PostNuke site?

    Thanks.

Also - any reason I might not want to go with the just-released, latest version of PN? Thanks.

A MySQL DBMS can run any number of databases at the same time, Phoenix (the default name for the PN DB), is just one of them. Technically you could just create a differently named database and that should be OK. Changing just the table pre-fix means you run two PNs from the same database. Again I do not think that it should be a problem, but there are some concideration you will have to think about. The number of tables in your "extended" DB will be fairly large. You cannot just delete the old DB when you are finished with your old installation. Resource allocation inside MySQL is proably better if you run two seperate dbs, rather than one. Easier to copy "inside" one DB, than between dbs (not difficult in most circumstances anyway).

I have run up to four PostNuke installations on one database, each with its own prefix, without any problems.

Backing Up the database is always a good idea, though. Besides, you should do regular backups anyway in case something happens to the server.

So it seems the prefix handles the issue. I said I have access to but one MySQL database because...I only have access to one in my hosting arrangement. It's extra $$ for a separate database to be created and I am not sure that it would be worth it for whatever performance increase it may offer (if any) if I can just use the one database. I'll do an export then create the tables for the 2nd PN site.
