Just for the record, I would ike to post this in this forum the following hack as a suggestion to be implemented in the core. Checkout this website:
http://www.tangant.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=88
This block is a modified core menu block which displays images before the menu items instead of the bullets.
10 images are included as well as directions for changing images. This block uses the same content as in your current menu, so just snap it in and you are ready to go.
This block has been available on Tangant.com for some time, so if you have already downloaded it then it's the same block.

Instead of building it into the core, can't you use CSS to apply images to an unordered list? It's much simpler that way as the images would be a part of the theme and PN would not need yet another daft hack on top of legacy code that already needs a lot of tidying up.
Older browsers that cannot display images as list bullet points would just get their browser standard bullets.
