I'm not sure exactly how this would work (having never used encompass) but at a basic level encompass is only a module so you change your theme to stock PostNuke theme prior to upgrade, remove encompass it would be the same as having a base PN installation.

You could then upgrade as normal and add Xanthia in as a new module after the upgrade. This is only theory so test this thoroughly prior to any procedure on a production site.

I have been able to do this myself, although it was sometime ago that i did.

As Mark has instructed, you should be ok. If I remember correctly, I removed a few tables that encompass had created as well, but I'm not going to reload it to see for you sorry. ;)

Changing to a default theme like PostNuke before an upgrade IMHO, is always the way to go anyway.
So, setting the theme, turning off any blocks or modules that are not in the default installation, and of course reading my "Upgrading Your Site Made Easy" in our tutorials section of this forum should get you thru just fine.

You bet, and good luck. Just be sure AS ALWAYS to have a backup of just before you do an upgrade. Always backup everything first. Making sure you get the drop tables in the SQL.
If you follow the instructions you'll be fine.
