I don't have a good understanding of how postnuke's core works, but I was wondering what to expect from the next version. Are any of the changes going to impact postnuke's speed?

My postnuke site is largely used as a reference site and people use it all day long to do searches for products. I get a lot of complaints about how slowly it runs. I've scoured these forums looking for ways to improve upon the speed (and have found a lot of useful things that have improved things a fair amount) but it still runs too slowly. I've removed a lot of features from the site, including the stats, forums, etc. and I would love to be able to use these things again.

I'd love to hear that the new version will be faster - it would really motivate me to upgrade!

You should be able to expect .8 to have some performance boost. But I have not done any type of speed testing myself.

While the package is bigger, than before. Somethings to consider are the use of templates with caching. Most everything is templated so it can be cached eliminating a lot of the dynamic generation of pages.. There is strict adherence to standards reducing code bloat to workarounds/hacks. Furthermore, the APIs and libraries available make for lighter 3rd party code. Also asynchronous server requests should reduce to need for whole page returns.

But with a bigger core package/features.. there maybe some performance loss in other areas. I haven't personally put a .8 under load (more like no real load has come to a .8 install). But I have my moments when one of my sites gets its 15 minutes of internet fame every so often...

I look forward to see some real world results as well.

Maybe this is helpful.

You should try caching - it may help. However, it's also entirely possible that if you have a busy site you've simply outgrown your hosting. If you have, you simply need a bigger server.

One other thing I've just thought of - if you're using your site as a searching base you should consider adding indexes to your MySQL tables according to the types of query executed in a search. PN0.7x is very badly indexed, and this is something I improved in .8
