Couple Questions

Hope this is the right area to post this in. I have a couple questions icon_razz

1. Are there any forum modules that are compatible with .8 version at this time?

2. Is the Multisite functional and where can i get information on its use and setup? Been looking around for this information but i must not be looking in the right spot lol icon_lol

Also where can i find information to better understand the categories module.

Any help would be appreciated icon_cool

No idea because I don't use it at the moment but as I understood, it works like Topics but with a tree organisation.

Mark West will work on a powerfull Multisites module for 0.81 after the stable release be finished. The tables will be shared with ease between (sub)domains and looks pretty good.

And about the Categories module, it's a lot improved in the RC2 and you should look at the code of Pages or News module, to see how it's used by other modules icon_wink

see ya!

Will there be a workaround available for .80 ?

No, but the whole multisites thing in .7x was a hack anyway, so an automatic upgrade from the .76x version of multisites is unlikely to happen. Of course, if you're deperate for .8 multisites you could always finish the module...

If you're hosting on linux and have root access, you can use symlinks to share common files at least. Database / table sharing is a different beast.

For anyone interested, I've put a small batch script (windows) for those running Vista that want to use the Vista mklink command to create symlinks.

What I do:

Place a .800 SVN in one location, then run the script to create all the common files (ie, core files that will not change)

Then, I only need to manage one SVN checkout and all my dev projects have the same core files updated at once. You would do the same thing in linux (which I do on my dev server) using ln -s.

I was just wondering if there was going to be instructions to use the .7x method on .8 in the meantime?
I guess not!
if you use and need a multi-site, you *must* wait for 0.81 or the Mark West's implementations, that is a lot improved, and you'll be able to set the shared tables via Web.

You can't use the .7x method on .8x because the required hacks to the core no longer exist (as far as I know). You could potentially share database tables with some clever use of DBUtil and some code changes, but that would of course be unsupported.

I currently have a PN.764 site not using MultiSites, but I would like to go to a PN.8n that does and will start to play with RC3 soon. Will I be able to go from a live PN.8 without MultiSites, to the planned PN.81 with MultiSites fairly painlessly?

Silly question I know... but what's the schedule for PN.81? Will it be weeks/months/years after PN.8 is released?

Yes

As there is stuff already piling up for .81, because of the feature freeze, and realistically there will probably be a need for some bugs to be fixed as we move from a more technical audience to a more general audience, and from 'test' sites to 'live' sites, I believe the hop form .8 to .81 should be fairly short, I would guess a few months.

Thanks for that. What about the migration path from PN.8 to Multisites PN.81?
